Is effort really the issue? He worked his ass off at UT and I don't remember the problems with Fisher being effort related.

He had finance issues and acted like a diva but I don't think that is the big issue. He's just not very good.

I've heard that effort is a huge part of his issue, as in he does not put for the effort to fully understand the playbook and does not do a lot of game study. That could be wrong, but what I've heard. He's always had some great physical tools.

true. And i don't know where Brando heard about VYs great work ethic at UT. He and Mack actually had some behind the scene clashes. In college, he could wing it and get by on his physical ability. Not so much in the pros.

Young just isnt very smart as a person or as a football player. That's his problem.

On the flip side, where did you hear about their clashes? No one can wing it and be that incredible. He had what many think is the best year of any QB in college football. Lost 1 game in a 2 year span. Anyone who thinks he did that by winging it is crazy. Mack and Greg Davis talked about all the work he did in between his freshman year and sophomore. That is where the on the field improvement came from.

Winging it is a little overkill but he certainly wasn't putting in a whole lot of extra effort and overtime in getting better. He's done the same thing in the pros.

As for he and Mack, well of course Mack is going to do nothing but praise his guys...that's his MO. I think their run ins were mostly in his freshman year but still, i would be investing to hear a fair and honest comment about what they thought about how much extra time he really put in

A leopard doesn't change his spots so I find it hard to believe thst he was a great student of the game in college and then stopped being one in the NFL.

Specifically, what are you basing that on? He didn't even finish a few of the games in 05 because they were up by so much because he was that good.

Where did you hear about their clashes his first year?

This is the obvious elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about -- Vince just isn't smart enough to run an NFL offense.

There's a lot of revisionism going on here. Back when he was at Texas, no one ever questioned his work ethic. In fact, everyone talked about the opposite - his dedication to improving (and he improved *dramatically* over the course of his Texas career), his being the first-to-arrive / last-to-leave type mentality, etc.

People are letting his NFL experience rewrite his college one.

Isn't that the case for most players?

He tooks snaps exclusively out of the Shotgun in College to give him more time to read defenses. The coaches adapted the playbook to minimize his shortcomings. Those shortcomings were exposed big time in the Pros.

Nothing wrong with re-writing history if the re-write is more accurate. He was extremely guarded and protected at UT (UTs program is very good at that) so I'm not surprised that everyone sang his praises while he was there and they were winning.

Like Granville mentioned, the coaches did a great job of minimizing his shortcomings but how much effort was really shown by him if those shortcomings are still what's preventing him from excelling, e.g. being able to read a defense?

The coach's job is to put he guy in a position that best helps the team and that is what mack did. Young improved his QB rating pretty much every year he was a starter and in his last year as a starter he had a qb rating of 98. There are lot of players who just don't make it.

He took snaps exclusively out of the shotgun because it made for a great zone-read system. Lots of QB's do that in college these days, including many smart ones. No one questions Colt McCoy's intelligence, and he did the same. OU runs exclusively out of the shotgun, etc.

Lots of supposition here. Your claim is that people inside and outside of the program simply lied and made up things that could be easily checked (like him being at practice early and leaving late) to promote him? Jeff Fisher praised his work ethic at Tennessee too during his first year there.

Maybe instead of inventing a backstory to rewrite his problems, we just look at reality. Both in college and the pros, he consistently improved his game year by year when on the field, reducing turnovers and increasing efficiency every year. But he showed zero ability to handle failure, and every time he got injured or taken out of a game, he completely imploded mentally. And ultimately, that led to his demise. He also didn't handle money well and looks to have gotten a bit obsessed with money, likely affecting his work ethic in his latter years in the league.

Or, it's not surprising that he's criticized for any and everything when he's not winning.

Norm Chow, in his first year at Tennessee:

    http://staugustine.com/stories/100106/sports_4117821.shtml

Offensive coordinator Norm Chow said Young has made tremendous strides because he is very determined to be a great player.

"He studies, he works and he's disciplined. He has great leadership skills. He's determined, and because of that, the work ethic comes along with it. If you're willing to work at it like he is, you continue to get better," Chow said.

It's not just Texas where people were saying these things.

You're right. Everyone else is wrong, except for Norm chow and Mack brown.

    It's a conspiracy.

Insert gif of burnt orange glasses falling on a guys face with the words "deal with it " appearing.

Hey man, for like the 8th time can you please cite where you heard from inside the program that VY didn't put in effort to get better as you said previously. Where did you hear that he and Mack got into a lot of spats? It's funny how you won't cite where that came from but will dismiss the things that have been said about him from his former coaches. I take that back. Everything that Mack, Greg Davis and Norm Chow say is bull**** but whatever Fisher said is dead on. What makes one opinion more valuable?

And again, he had one of the best seasons of a college player ever. He was unstoppable. Literally. Defenses could not stop him from running the ball. Take a step back and think of how dumb it sounds to say that a guy who could not be defended was lazy and just getting by through luck.

If he would have played better, he just would have been taken out of games earlier than he was already leaving them with their huge leads.

Say what you want about VY as a headcase in the pros. Say what you want about how bad VY was in the pros. Say what you want about horn fans. But don't think for a second that you can go back and start painting his time in college as anything else but herculean and not sound like an idiot. The guy has no dignity left as a pro. Don't unfairly try to discredit what he did in his years as an amateur athlete.

I would love to hear who your team was in college and if they went up against VY.
