I'm not talking about a tax on the design, I'm talking about a tax on the raw materials, or at least the optimum materials (admittedly, I have no idea of the overlap this would have with common industrial application on said materials).

What happens when you can successfully print currency on one of these things?

Not possible to tax the raw materials, because they have millions of legit uses... This is one place the NRA, the EFF and the ACLU would all fight on the same side.

Or, for the larger denominations, some kind of paper currency with two-dimensional imagery.

interesting, hadn't thought of that as an argument in favor of bitcoins

3D printing with metal is a considerable challenge (power requirements to melt metal for one).

Yeah items that require intricate circuitry and metal will be safe for quite awhile. The sex toy industry is screwed though.

A tax on residential metal melters, if those even exist, and a tax on bullets, would do the trick no? I mean, you can print all the 3D guns you want, but if you charge a lot for the bullets...

    Chris Rock gun control.

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Reagan successfully turned the Republican Party into slogans, quips, and catch phrases, nothing else matters as long as you can entertain them with stupid ****.

*replace if it moves with if it harms people outside of the market transaction excessively---a negative externality.

*replace government with Nobel-prize winning policy experts, academics, bankers, pundits, and government officials.
