    Putting Swoly's predictably bizarre stance aside....

    I do find it interesting that so many people automatically take the student's side not knowing anything more about the situation except what they've seen on the video.

    People are so quick to blame teachers for all of society's ills instead of their own bratty kids. That, IMO, is the biggest part of the problem.

    That portion of your argument is fine.

    however, that's not the 'predictably bizarre stance,' that drummer was referring to.

    ok, by that logic, why the f are we on a fourm, discussing random topics on places where are not and on people we don't know?

    as for people wondering why we take the kids side, how many high schoolers you know, are that passionate about learning? how many are that passionate about anything? i think is natural we all gravitated to the kid speaking out about learning more. because most of us could have cared less.

    I know a bunch. They take an order from a teacher when they ask them to do something. I've seen it first hand, and they don't continue to run their mouth as they are leaving because they get kicked out. If he were that passionate about learning, he wouldn't have been asked to leave the classroom to begin with. :cool:

    Sounds frustrated... teacher should have been smart enough to put him and the class in line.

    I cant believe that most folks are talking about how a white hippie looking dude isnt the reincarnation of a famous black preacher...lol

    All jokes aside, while i dont know the history of this kid and the teaching reputation of the teacher, I have to commend the kid for making a valid and general point of the 2ndary education system here in the US. More and more students are missing out on high quality education with teachers that feel a packet of reading material is more important than actual verbal communication in a public classroom. I dont understand why not just post the reading material online and let the students do something else.

    Teaching is now relegated into getting student to do well on standardized state tests and thats it. But the obvious truth is that the quality of education has truly diminished...If you had a poll on the education system and compared it to the outside world, is the US offering what we should be offering, or is China, Japan, European nations doing a better job? This kids rant(an 18 year old sophmore that supposedly dropped out and came back) just typifies what we already know.

    What is sad, is that there are classes that are high level classes that cant be offered to everyone... But there in lies the biggest problem. Ever wonder why there are Honors/GT level classes, Advanced classes, and then just plain ordinary classes? We have given an option for student to choose mediocrity and they have chosen it. Few students want to challenge their minds. The pressures of getting a better GPA is masking the quality of education.

    There should never be a distinction in high school education. Every student should have the same level of intellectual material available. And every student should be driven to maximize their knowledge base. Schools dont do this anymore. Teachers are driven by having to meet state and federal goals of education. As our education system gets more watered down, students just like this will cry out for something better. And we should be able to provide it for them...

    Because largely, they can get away with anything. We don't hold kids accountable fr their actions anymore. We try to see if they were justified. 25 years ago, there was no trying to justify being disrespectful to a teacher. If you did it, you were in trouble...period.

    If I would have done that, I would have had season tickets for detention and I have no idea what my Dad would have done. It would have been unpleasant.

    //rant:

    As a teacher, I despise some of the posts in this thread.

    My God....if you only understood the work that goes along with being an educator and making sure that ALL students evidence progress....

    We spend more time with "your" kids with the goal of providing every future opportunity imaginable, yet we are blamed for almost everything wrong that involves children.

    Some of it comes from home, right?

    The boy in the video is an 18-year-old sophomore from what I read. The teacher did not seem incredibly friendly, and even if she gave this child a "packet" for the day, his disrespect echoes the sentiment of a large portion of society.

    It's tiring and frustrating. We chose a profession that pays us dog*****, and for the majority of us, we teach because we genuinely care about "your" kids. That's it.

    Understand that being a teacher is not an 8-5. It's a lifestyle, and the only "thanks" that we want in the end is for our students to graduate and thrive.

    Teacher Appreciation Week was this last week, and I wonder how many of "you" (people, in general) communicated with an educator who helped you along the way. It's easier just to blame us for low test scores in some states or, God forbid, a day where we aren't the most effective because we're battling bronchitis and teaching text structures.

    I love my job and my "kids," all 72 of them, but I hate how teachers are perceived because of random incidents like the one that started this thread.

    ///End rant.

    Love you all. :)

    QFT. Repped and keeping fighting the good fight. A great number of the students appreciate it, even though they won't go to youtube to say so.

    I think even you will agree that this is not always the case. I had handful of teachers in my grade school career that clearly only cared about the paycheck. Undoubtedly, I've had countless other teachers who have been passionate and caring, but it's not like every teacher cares about their kids. Kudos to you though for choosing this important profession and loving it. I know I could never do it.
