This is a terrible thread. Misleading and baiting.

The value of a player, even for the haters, is expressed not only his play and the effusive 'fit' on the current team, but also in what he might bring in return in a trade. In general, you only 'void' a contract because its total value is negative all things considered. In Lin's case, ignoring his direct marketing value for the franchise, his production of 18/7 per 36 min over 2.5months under unfavorable condition would get you good return that might even 'fit' your supposed ideal of Rockets' team. Say by performance alone, you might get Dragic, Lowry, Milsap, Bledsoe etc. in a trade. It speaks to Morey's management genius that none of contracts aside from the mental accident that's White has negative value that you'd rather void than having it on your book.

I'll get to the 30% in a second... But I don't get the issue of the cap here.

Maybe LAST year, when the Rockets cut Lin when he was a nobody and hadn't done anything... at that stage... the team could and DID say cut Lin.

But is cutting Lin really the best thing for the rockets? What about trading? If you look at all the objective data, his improvement as well as his coachability/attitude and the rest of his intangibles, he has proven himself to be ATLEAST an average NBA starting PG in this league with flashes of pure brilliance. Add the money he brings in that more than pays for his contract and there are many teams around the league with cap space that you could trade him to for at least a high draft pick or a solid back-up centre? (I mean you got a 2nd rounder for Morris). As far as I'm aware the 15 M in the last year is not an issue because the cap hit after a trade would still be $8M.

The people who want to void Lin's contract are essentially saying he is still the same worthless scrub the Rockets' declared him to be when they cut him last season... and in case you havent' noticed that's been the attitude of a LOT of posters on here throughout the season, regardless of what Lin seems to do on or off the court.

Not everyone who voted posted there opinion why... but among those that did...

That's just from the first three and a half pages. The majority of people that have posted that want to void his contract want to do so because they think he isn't worth his contract. That's not the same as some pie in the sky cap space argument.

Is it a coincidence that many of the people who voted to void Lin's contract are the same ones who never have anything positive to say about him?

How else are you going to evaluate where Lin is as a player now?

He showed something great during Linsanity as the number 1 option. And did pretty well even after Melo came back.

Then he had a BAD first month here, and it's been widely acknowledged he was still recovering from injury.

Since then his stats have improved at a steady rate as he learned to adapt to his new role.

To me... and this is the kicker... Lin NOW is a better player than he was during Linsanity. He has improved his defense. He has stabalised his 3 pointer, he has cut down on his turnovers, he is much better going left than he was before and can play off the ball better.

The only difference was that in NY he had total freedom to attack at will, got endless screens and had fantastic finishers like Ty Chandler for alleyops and catching passes etc. (Like CP3 and Bledsoe have in Blake and DeAndre on the Clippers)

It's baffling to me how people can't see this. Unless all they are doing is going by raw box scores without considering any context.

I can spot some devoted LOHs if you scan the voters who vote for Lin.
I take this an amusing thread than anything.

Why there is no Harden there, don't you want Lebron?

Royce white is a joke in NBA, but I can not believe some people voted DMO,Asik and some others, can they see Royce white is a waste? I predict more troubles will come even he plays next season.

It's Royce by a long shot.

Unless... we have a legitimate shot at signing CP3. In that case, it'd be Lin. But, since I don't think CP3 would come here even if we got Dwight... it's Royce.

Probably the people who have an infarction while throwing a fit every time Asik mishandles a ball. We get it: he has bad hands. Get over it. We knew that before he played a single game for us. He's still one of the best centers in the NBA.

Think about it, if you gave every team the option to amnesty a player right now, how many would pick a mid 1st round pick on a rookie contract?

That's how efficient Morey has been with this roster. His worst contract (White) hardly hurts us at all.

That's the only thing that I believe may have caused a dip in his stats then, I acknowledge that...but if he puts up the same stats next year that he's put up in NY and here in Houston, then it would be safe to say he's who we thought he was. I honestly think he may have some improvement, but nothing significant. If he puts up 18-20 pts and 7-9 assists on a with his same FG% (44-45%) I think he'd be worth his contract, but as of now he's more hype than substance when it comes to benefit/salary cap hit...at least to me he is. Hell, look at Lowry...he put up similar stats in 2010 and Dragic put up slightly better stats this year with less salary. We Shall See.

Really Clutch? I respect you but when you call it stupid it makes me feel like you are calling me stupid. The whole point of that thread was to see if all the people voting against Lin in this thread were just haters. It made it clearer to me that was not the case(if you would have allowed it to run a little longer it would have made it even more clear). A percentage of people hate Lin on here no matter what but the majority don't like Lin the basketball player.

I actually thought that percentage was higher because IMO the minute you put Royce White on this poll it makes everyone else irrelevant. So the thread did clear some things up for me. There are many people on here who think Jeremy Lin is not very good and would rather have him dumped ahead of Royce White. There might be a few of those who think White still has potential (Probably family). There are some that preffer Beverly and think we could better with the salary space than Lin. And some that just think Lin sucks and hate him at all costs even to the point of picking him over Royce White irregardless of cap.

That thread you closed actually surprised me because I thought the number of straight out Haters would have been higher. I just don't get how people can't see how good he has been for us. Morey said he is the third best player on this team in contributing to wins. But I didn't need to here that to know that.

Lin is better than than he was last year when he put up all those numbers in NY. He plays an all around better game. He is capable of putting those numbers up here too. But he defers to Harden. Not suggesting that he shouldn't only that his numbers are down across the board because Harden runs the show a lot. I guess don't see that. The look at the playoffs and say he sucked. And he did suck that first game but then came back the second game and played good the first half and then got injured.

He was never a 100% after that not even close. But he gets damned for that. Harden didn't play good in games 2 and 3 played like crap in game 4. If he doesn't get in foul trouble and stays on the floor we might have lost that game as well. But then he plays great in game 5. It's a big stage and some guys show up quicker than others. But Lin is a smart basketball player and he would have adjusted and I am confident he would have helped us much more if he was healthy.

I get that Beverly is a very exciting player and people like his defense hustle and athleticism but Lin does things on both sides of the ball and IMO is still the better PG. You can debate that and maybe that's enough reason to dump his salry over Royce White but IMO that would make us weaker.

Now if you are talking trading him for another PG that's a different story. Don't see that PG out there for his price but not really looking. Maybe Dragic. I really liked him but Lin has more upside and Goran has a 30 mil 4year deal so it's not like there is a lot of savings there. Enough said I don't get why people on this board dislike Lin so much but it seems most of them do it for basketball reasons which is much more acceptable than just hate.

I picked Royce White since he does absolutely nothing for the Rockets, but I can see the case for Lin. However, 8.3m with 13/6 considering his usage rate, minutes, youth, and intangibles and I would consider that a pretty good deal, even a bargain.

But White hasn't done a single god damn thing to help this team. It may only be a couple mil, but that's currently money down the drain.

Lol. 18 and 7?? Youre kinda naive if you think he can average those numbers unless harden takes a smaller role in the offense and that aint happening

Lol so he has to put up 18-20 points and 7-9 assists on 45% shooting just to justify his 8 mil/year contract? You do realize players with those numbers are on max or near max contracts or will be on max contracts very soon. Lin might end up putting up those numbers, but if he doesn't that doesn't mean his contract isn't worth it. He's basically already justified his contract so far and will most likely continue to do so

Okay, good that you at least accept that his injury had a part to play in the first month of the season. But it seems to me you are still evaluating him on the overall season raw box score while completely ignoring the context.

Firstly, in the last 2.5 months of the season he has averaged 18/7 (the numbers you wanted) per 36 minutes. So in that respect, for the second half of the regular season he's already producing very strong numbers, yet people don't seem to notice this because they only look at the raw box score.

Do you think this is very little improvement?

    His 3 point shot went from November - 26% --> Dec - 29% ---> Jan - 32% ---> Feb - 42% ---> March - 40% ---> April - 36%.

So... his three point shooting went from 29% in the first half of the season to 40% in the second half.

Do you think this is very little improvement?

Secondly, according to ESPN Stats only eight point guards averaged more than 18 PPG. Even Chris Paul only managed 16.9 for the season. Of those 8 the following had more than 7 assists - John Wall, Deron Williams, Tony Parker and Russel Westbrook... so only FOUR point guards in the NBA meet your criteria. I also wonder how many of them were the primary ball handlers of their team and how many of them played next to ball dominant guards like James Harden?

And this is what you expect from Lin for $8M?

It seems to me that the people who don't rate Lin seem share a common pattern.

    1) They set very unrealistic standards for what they want from his production, especially compared to the value of his contract.

    2) They seem to take very little account of him being injured, his minutes, or his role/usage on the team.
