I was just watching a program with John Stossel and he revealed that the Rockets have a pamphlet they give NBA players they details the extra "rolexes and vehicles" you could buy with the money saved on a potential contract in Houston due to the lack of state income taxes. Found it to be sort of amusing and interesting at the same time.
As strange as this might seem, the Rockets could use this to lure Dwight, along with the fact that we will be better off than the Lakers.
Yes that is cool and all, but how many Starbucks Doubleshots can you buy with the savings? The people want to know.
My understanding is that at least on a year to year basis, for 4 years, it's a wash between the larger contracts that can be offered to players like Howard and Paul in a state like California, and what they could earn in Texas during the same stretch. That extra year could still be a deal breaker, but I like what the Rockets are doing. Not having a state income tax is a big deal, and as Durant has proven in OKC, you dont have to be in LA, Chicago, or New York to make a killing with endorsements.
Last time I checked state income tax in California was something like 8%. 8% of a million dollars is 80,000 dollars. That's just for someone making the veterans minimum or a rookie contract. 80 grand is alot of money to anyone... even a pro athlete.
Bad move by Morey. By emphasizing state income tax the Rockets will end up with nothing but materialistic players who don't love basketball.

Such a thing is sadly relevant in these times. In a perfect world they would play for the love of the game, first and foremost, but when has this world ever been perfect.
has this no-state-tax thing worked ever before? man, morey is trying a little too hard here. I say iPads are the way to go.
Its been reported that Riley used it as justification for taking "less" money in regards to their salaries when it really didn't matter because the tax money they were saving was more than enough to make up the difference. Had Florida instituted state tax before, there is no way the Superfriends would have happened. The Superfriends often get praise for "taking less money" when in reality they are more than making up for what they "gave up" by signing in Miami in tax savings. Yes, its a HUGE selling point to free agents.
The mavs are an old washed up team on the decline that's the difference between the Rockets and Mavs Howard picking Mavs over Rockets ha not happening
