Finch has a huge say in the X's and O's of the Rockets. Sampson has a huge say in the defensive scheme and is a workaholic.

the image that sticks out most in my mind from the playoffs is McHale on the sidelines screaming "move the ball" as the thunder proceeded to hand us our asses in game 1. I think everyone here was misinformed on why the ball movement was suddenly stopping. most of us can agree that while, yes, it is ultimately McHale's responsibility to ensure this team doesn't get bogged down in predictable iso plays that result in contested shots, he certainly wasn't the one pushing for these plays.

I like the resigning. I want to see what McHale can do with a full training camp (though of course, the players on the roster now won't all be the same come training camp). What I'd like to see:

    1) McHale implement a motion offense that we run ALL GAME long. we've seen spurts of how good this team can be. real contenders don't play good ball in spurts. whatever the problem is, I want him to identify it and address it.

    2) Big man post game development. This should be right in his wheel house. And I believe we still have carroll dawson helping out from time to time as well. it's possible that we haven't kept our big men on the roster long enough for these guys to have an impact - but then again we had ppat for quite a while and though his jumper became consistent, he never really improved in the post. Greg Smith shows flashes of improvement and i'll credit both those men for that. But Jones, Motie, Robinson all need serious work. Get it done McHale. We will not be contenders until we have a big man we can drop it down to in the post when the jumpers aren't falling.

Sampson is no better at running actual plays than Mchale is.

"A four-year extension is no small commitment, but the NBA’s most successful organizations in recent years — the Spurs, Thunder, Heat, Lakers and Celtics — all share a common element: front office stability."

Makes sense. Corporate strategic plans are always 3-5 years. The GM who devised the strategic plan should be around to see it succeed or fail.

Didn't like Mchale at first and whether he's a championship caliber coach is still to be seen. But the results were impressive with what we had... harden, parsons and asik out performed expectations and Beverly was truly a great find. Now hopefully Morey can fix the mistake of signing Lin and flipping the asset for something useful.

Does daryl interview himself and use analytics to decide his contract extensions?

Agree with all of this, well said. If Sampson leaves I hope we can acquire an X's/O's assistant coach that can help fill in the blanks.

    Something funny

JVG once said that a lot of the differences between NBA coach and "lesser" coaches is luck. He basically implies that there are many capable coaches in the world, but most never get an opportunity to shine ont the big stage.

Morey obviously agrees with this, because he put together his staff like one would put together a team. Finding talent from all different places. I'm sure if Sampson leaves, he'll just find another smart, obscure coach whose eager to prove himself on the big stage.

I'm sure Morey is capable of finding another great assistant coach but hopefully he won't need to. I think Sampson is very valuable to this staff and hope he stays.

He's already on the team. Finch is a pure coach, the individual takes a back seat to the way the team plays with this guy. You can call that x's and o's if you'd prefer it.

All Morey does is make sure the staff and roster have some ethnic diversity to appeal to global fans.

The roster has Asian Lin, white Parsons, black Harden, Euro/Middle Eastern Asik and Latin Garcia and Delfino.

The coaching staff has white Finch, Native American Sampson, black Bickerstaff and whatever McHale counts as.

you cannot talk the talk (of ball movement), you gotta walk the walk as to preparations of set plays. the so-called read-and-react offense guarantees nothing and leaves the decision right up to the players on court too much.
