ESPN reporting 90% chance McHale returns. The way they worded it, sounds like the 10% would be McHale choosing to walk away, not the Rockets firing him. Also said if McHale leaves Stan VanGundy would get the call.
kevin has lots of faults... drawing plays etc... but one thing he is good at is managing and motivating players...especially playoffs
Stan van gundy was terrible. I don't know why people keep insisting. Oh yeah, he surrounded Dwight with nothing but 3pt shooters.
I like McHale. People always seem to blame him when we lose but he's not the one running ISO plays. He's been an advocate of ball movement alll season and complained about "stickiness" almost every loss we have. Why on earth would he complain about isos if he was the one who wants the team to run it?
Maybe we can get Phil as our head coach, JVG as our defensive coordinator, and McHale as our motivator. That's a coaching dream team.
Sad to hear, because McHale really does have charisma based on how the team has responded to him. But if he can't handle the gruel of a full time coaching job, he should retire rather than half-ass it. Van Gundy has several things going for him. First, he's a straight shooter to a fault, which generally resonates well with younger players. Also, SVG like his brother is quite responsive to advanced scouting/statistical system. As you said, SVG had his team shoot gazilllion 3s. Just like how we do it here right now. The Rockets want a coaching "system" in place. One where everyone works together. And SVG is a type of coach who would definitely integrate new ideas and findings and scouting reports in how we would play.
Any alum of Cheers can coach my team any day: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/H3ZsfdovGzw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I have to admit I didn't like the McHale signing at first because a) he wasn't a household coaching name and b) his reputation as a GM. But he's really grown on me. You can tell the players LOVE him and that's probably the most important thing to be a coach in the NBA.
I really like McHale, and if he leaves, I wonder if it would be to follow Dwight Howard. The guy is a great motivator, and I could see him doing wonders to help a guy like Dwight reach his potential and stay there. That being said, I don't see or want McHale to leave.
I hope McHale stays. Did a good job and guys on the team like and respect him. Being well-liked is a pretty important part of being an NBA coach nowadays. While I can understand if he chooses to walk away (losing a child may have that effect on a guy), I think he will decide that being with the team is what he needs in his life. Speaking of coaching, I wonder where Sampson will end up next season. He'll certainly get interviewed. It's another question whether he gets hired. A lot of guys vying for these openings, but having a successful year with a young team should enhance his reputation and prospects a good deal.
Warts and all, and despite some of his urine-poor decision making during this last series, we do still need McHale. More then he needs the Rockets, I get the sense. Not that he is doing anyone any favors of course! But I guess I am just seeing the half-full side of things, or trying to ...
