Good to hear. I guess the commercial advertising it 'might be the best in the series' wasn't just BS. And I only take that line to mean 'it's way better than IM2, forget that happened and give us another chance guys.'
don't be amazed by the long runtime. Their are lotta fillers that are so unnecessary and if you completely remove those parts, the movie wouldn't feel different one bit. Like i said, horrible movie. While it can be argued that it is better than IM2, it doesn't come close to the first one.
Why don't you use a spoiler tag and then include some specifics, instead of this general 'I'm an expert and this was a horrible movie' thing. Because I saw this movie last night, and no, it is not a horrible movie. It was quite good. No it was not written and directed by Joss Whedon, so it looks and feels different than Avengers or the first two IM movies. But that's ok. It was funky and sly, and quite funny in spots. There's a reason we keep hearing comparisons to the Lethal Weapon movies, because in many instances, it felt very much like watching Mel Gibson and Danny Glover doing their buddy thing. The one criticism I would level personally against the movie - and this is by no means saying it was a 'horrible movie' - is that it used a lot of 'short-hand' in moving the story along, and sort of glosses over details which might make a person scratch his head in puzzlement, if things were not just jumping to the next bit. But that's ok too. The movie was already long enough, I am sure some minor detail exposition was left on the cutting room floor. Not enough to make it 'horrible'. However, I will say this: the marketing people committed the cardinal sin, as far as I am concerned, in that one of the big commercials for the movie contained dialog which is not actually in the movie. And I freaking HATE that. If it's not in the movie, then DON'T PUT IT IN THE TRAILERS!
ok how about this Nero Spoiler - lack of ironman was the biggest fail in this movie. The movie is called Ironman not RDJR feat Ironman - fillers that do nothing for the story. the w hole part with the kid could have been shortened or completely cut off from the movie - Mandarin twist. Everyone was disappointed about this one. No need to go into further detail - the ending action sequence that turned into the notebook by the end. Also pepper killing the main villain WTF were they thinking There are many more but these ones jumped into my head as soon as I left the movies. The only decent part about this movie IMO was Guy Pearce. He's a brilliant actor and shines in every single scene in this movie. He literally saved the movie from being a complete utter failure. Also, I HATE when they fool you using the trailers. The trailer makes the movie looks 1000X better than what it actually is, and you'll know why by the middle of the movie.
Spoiler -One of the main themes of the movie is that Tony IS Iron Man... -while i agree it might have been too long, the scenes with the kids are meant for character growth and to demonstrate that Tony doesn't need the suit at all times to be effective, his brain is the real weapon -Mandarin twist- not a fan, but I guess Guy Pearce is a good modern day interpretation of the Mandarin, sweet tatoos -Pepper killing the main bad guy was weird, but fits within the scope of the movie All in all better than IM2, and I thought it was really fun and a new look at Tony Stark.
I agree with putyouonthegame on many points, but i still liked it for the humor and pacing. I think rdj's life fits as iron man though they toned down Tony's alcoholism to nothing and he plays Tony with a twinge of autism. It doesn't follow comic book canon so that might have geeks up in arms.
I totally understand geeks being up in arms about this, but, Spoiler .. regarding the Mandarin.. I am glad I went into the movie spoiler-free, because I was taken completely by surprise with the 'twist' there.. especially because there were lines in the trailers which were not in the movie: 'The question is, do you want an empty life, or a meaningful death?' (something like that).. implying that the Mandarin was specifically targeting/striking at Stark, which in the movie was not the case at all, it was the President. So, expecting this big showdown with the Mandarin, well, I can understand how the comic nerds would be all upset about the way it unfolded. BUT.. maybe it's the conspiracy theorist in me, but I see no reason at all why Kingsley's character has to be who he said he was, just because he said that's who he was.. in other words, isn't it just a teensy bit possible that the Mandarin actually WAS the Mandarin - the 'Master' - and when he saw that his compound was being assaulted, he put on this persona of being some d-grade actor in order to deflect interest away from himself and onto, say, Killian? Just saying, if ol Ben pops up in future installments as the Mandarin again, don't be too surprised.. This makes a bit more sense too, if you think about it, because otherwise, what an incredibly unreliable 'loose-end' the guy would be for Killian, and could easily blow the whole elaborate scheme. No, if I was in the prediction-making business, I would say that Kingsley's Mandarin actually is/was the main shadow bad guy, manipulating events, pulling strings, perhaps even fooling Killian, as Killian mentions some role Trevor had played.. Anyway, Kingsley's performance was great, much better than I expected, given some of the shlock roles he has taken on over the years, Gandhi notwithstanding. The Mandarin can still be the Mandarin, all I'm saying.. it's not outside the realm of possibility. Oh, and yeah, Pearce is pretty good, but for the previous poster to say Pearce is awesome in everything, and elevates whatever he is in, well, clearly he never saw Lockout.
Spoiler I was under the impression that Aldrich Killian (Guy pearce) was the real Mandarin, he even says so in the movie. He even had some weird tatoos and spit fire.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion but wow, you are just off in Never Never Land with all of your critiques. Every. Single. One. My wife and I liked it a lot. For those of you who are not irretrievable nerds, you probably will, too. Exactly. Good Lord. I was always a comic book fan as a kid but now I see what separates fans from comic book convention "Galaxy Quest" types.
Spoiler Yeah, I think they made Pierce the Mandarin. He even said he was, and they made him don the crappy snake tatoos. I can't really see how a dude with ten rings would translate on the big screen though. You'd have to explain each ring and what rules it has and go into exposition mode to allow Tony to figure out a counterplan. I rather Mandarin be a fake fortune cookie than to have mother****ing Ghandi play an Oriental role. There's fanservice for fans who've seen different incarnations of the suit. And, Piper does get a suit in one arc. Having her wear one or killing the boss isn't that out of place. Locking Guy Pierce up in a suit and self destructing was already a pretty good kill scene. Is anyone excited about Extremis? Totally different portrayal than the comics, BUT...seems like they're paving way to allow that to be introduced further into the next movie. The comic arc for extremis is that Tony's next suit is extremis...a living bioweapon that is in some respects self sentient and can access any network online. Extremis cured tony of his heart and suit dependency problems in the comic... like the ending, but it made him into a Skynet-like force.
