Duke has a total undergrad enrollment of 6,680.

If every student is under 24 and every student purchases the Duke Health Insurance plan...

    Under 24, the annual charge is $1,755 * .3% * 6680 = $35,170.20

    That doesn't even cover 1.

I'm possibly doing this all wrong.

They're not paying for sex-reassignment surgery. They're paying to add coverage of sex-reassignment under the school's insurance plan. This only goes to subsidizing the extra premium that would result from adding sex reassignment to the plan.

sex reassignment surgery isn't for people who just feel like switching sexes. people who get it believe they are a woman trapped in a male's body and vice versa. it's a mental health condition really, it's not for vanity purposes like plastic surgery or liposuction

A bit off topic . . .and probably another conversation
    and
Not intending to be offensive though I suspect it will be

How is that different than these people that want to cut off healthy limbs
because they have that mental disorder [Body integrity identity disorder ]

I figured those amputations are covered too . . .the mind is a weird place

    This.

A private institution choosing to spend its money on services isn't really all that controversial. I think that the calculus would be different if this were NC State spending tax dollars on this coverage.

So, are public universities not allowed to do this?

That would depend on the particular state legislature and what laws they have established for state Universities.

Not to mention that state universities tend to have a more constricted budget than their private counterparts.

Indeed. I'm sure all public universities in Texas have mandatory fees that some students would feel unnecessary for themselves personally. But if state/federal laws dictate such things, then you have to pay it.

The only difference with private schools is that they can make their own rules. If their rules are too out of whack, they'll get punished by having less students apply and pay their tuition to them. But as long as they can get students to pay tuitition to go, then they can make it mandatory to do cartwheels for all I care.

It's different because there's a far clearer risk of medical and biological harm and a much less ambiguous quality of life issue with a desire to sever one's limbs. Beyond reproduction, possession and use of limbs is far more integral to one's organic functionality than their genital concavity is.
