Everyone who is under the assumption that we can get Howard in a sign and trade, that is wrong. LA cannot receive any players in a trade for Howard under the new CBA. This is from the new CBA: "Starting in 2013-14, teams more than $4 million above the tax level cannot receive a player in a sign-and-trade transaction." The Lakers fall under this category meaning they cannot receive players in a S&T so don't suggest it anymore. That's it, but I feel like people are really confused by this so hopefully that was a little bit educational. Here's an ESPN article covering the new CBA rules if you're curious: http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/CBA-111128/how-new-nba-deal-compares-last-one
Why on earth would we do a sign and trade? Secondly they can receive players already under contract, they just can't receive a player being sign and traded, e.g. they could receive blake griffin, they could not receive chris paul.
Find a source if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. I think it goes both ways, not just players that are signed and traded.
It's been people around these parts mentioning it as if it were an option, when it isn't. The choice is his....if he wants to be a Rocket, he has to come here for less money than what LA can offer. S&T to get the max is not on the table. His strategy of "I want to play in a big market" "Dwight says he will not sign long-term with anyone but...." might cost him 30 mill. If he's truly unhappy in LA, he'll go where he will be happy....but I highly doubt he doesn't just stay with LA. They can pay him the most.
Starting in 2013-14, the team receiving the player cannot be above the "apron" ($4 million above the tax level) after the trade 1, 2. Starting in 2013-14, the team cannot receive a player in a sign-and-trade if they have used the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception (see question number 25) that season. 1 1. These teams are free to send players to other teams in sign-and-trade transactions, or to receive players in sign-and-trade transactions who weren't signed-and-traded themselves. Also, the restriction applies only to the sign-and-trade transaction itself -- teams are free to acquire players who had been signed-and-traded in earlier transactions. from cbafaq point 89
Exactly. It's all over the trade/sign Howard threads. So I'm just trying to clean that up. The thread probably takes 30 seconds to read, and most people don't know the rules. Just trying to be helpful.
That rule means that a player cannot be signed and traded to a team that is more than $4 above the tax threshold. The Lakers can however sign and trade Howard for a player that is ready under contract. That being said, it doesn't really matter as far as the Rockets are concerned. Under the new CBA a player can't get more money than they could by outright signing with a team. Since the Rockets have capspace there is no reason for them to want to sign and trade for Howard. Howard wouldn't get any additional money and we would have yo give up assets.
Yup. Though truth be told, it really needs to be in all the Laker forums, too. I think that's where the faulty perception comes from. The Lakers don't want to accept that they could lose him for nothing, so the casual fans that don't deeply follow the game/CBA are throwing out ludicrous trade proposals. Then they hit Twitter and it takes on a life of its own.
The only reason we would do a sign and trade is if the Lakers asked for say Thomas Robinson, rather than us dumping him for basically nothing, just out of etiquette.
They would be able to do a sign and trade for Josh Smith. If they send Lin and Asik as rumored somewhere else on here and sign Smith for a starting salary of about 13 million they should have enough to give Howard a Max contract. Maybe would have to dump Trob or TJones to make it work. Some of the cap specialists (Bima) can verify this but we would be gutted. Harden Howard and Josh smith plus Beverly and Parsons and Royce white . If we trade everyone away that we can and release all the players not guaranteed we can sign CP3 we would have trade everybody but Parsons, Royce White and Harden pretty much. To get CP3 and Howard as some suggest they want gone would be Garcia Delfino, Lin, Trob, TJones, DMo, Asik and AB. Maybe we could keep Greg smith and Anderson if we somehow find someone stupid enough to take Royce White.
The most likely scenario would be the other way round. You sign Dwight, and then you sign and trade Smith for just Asik for anything of 13.384m or under (the umbrella for non taxpaying teams is 100% + 5m for receiving contracts of $9.8-$19.6m), with just those 2, we're going to be over the cap, but about $7m short of the luxury tax.
Your wrong and it's been posted 100 times. La can receive players in SNT they just get acquire a free agent in a snt
It's all good. You've had some quality posts since you joined... I appreciate it. And thanks also to those who corrected and clarified. Closing the thread.
