How much are the Rockets practicing their mid-range jumpers?

I've been wondering how different their shooting routine is, if at all, now that they shoot so few mid range jumpers.

I imagine they focus less on the mid-range and more on threes than before, which all seems like a logical thing to do, but how much mid-range practice do they really need? Should they almost exclusively practice threes and shots near and at the rim?

I know it's very late in the season to discuss this, but there is still some room for improvement and they may keep it up next year. Maybe Clutch can chime with what he's seen at practice.

    Semi-relevant and interesting tweet:

The Rockets as a team? 46.</p>&mdash; Tom Haberstroh (@tomhaberstroh) <a href="https://twitter.com/tomhaberstroh/status/329955857183932418">May 2, 2013</a></blockquote>

Aaron Brooks adds this to our offense.

It would be crazy if we all of a sudden started shooting mid range to throw the Thunder off. Of course, if we miss a lot we would like as stupid as Brooks fouling Asik.

Mid-range jumper? May I quote Bernie Mac? "S*******y****."

Bring this up to the Rockets players and they'd be like, "You can shoot from inside the arc? Wait; you mean, at the basket, right? What? Further back from the basket, but not at the 3-point line? That's allowed?!"

Then McHale limps up (step, drag, step, drag): "Patrick, what are you telling them? Do you want to go back to Russia? Don't pay any attention to him, guys!"

I love the stat contained in the tweet. That's the biggest difference between Houston and NYK. Two teams that have historically high 3pts made during the season. Houston gets the rest of its shots in the paint. NYK get the rest of their baskets on long twos by Melo & JR. I'll take a harden dribble drive to the basket everyday over a Melo 20 footer.

Well you die by the long 2 and die by the long 2 so 3's are still better.

Most of our mid-range jumpers were from Iso plays, and well contested. I bet if we ran some pick n' pop or off the curl mid range J's, our shooting percentage from there would be much higher.

We've got guys who can hit it besides him.

Garcia, Delfino, Brooks, and Harden can hit it. Maybe Chandler and Beverley. Hard to tell with Beverley, since I've only seen him in this offense.

If it's a two, it better in or around the paint. If it's not a two, it better be a 3.

    Maximize dat dere muther****en efficiency.

If the defense wants to run Houston's shooters off the 3 point line, it will open up driving lanes to the bucket. You really want Harden/Lin/Brooks/Parsons etc. with open driving lanes to the bucket?

Very few teams can afford to run Houston's perimeter players off the 3 point line with their ability to still pack the paint. Memphis with Gasol/Z-Bo and LA with Howard/Gasol being the two that come to the top of my head.

I take Woodson over McHale any day of the week. Look what he did to the Knicks. Second seeds in the east with the oldest team in the league and with only 3 scorers: Melo, JR and Felton.

    That's not the question.

I'm asking how much time are they spending practicing their mid range jumpers and is that time just a waste, considering their style?

I'm assuming they still practice them because I can't believe they wouldn't at all anymore. One could argue it's still necessary, just in case. On the other hand, we shoot so few, maybe they don't need to practice them at all, and they would be better off working on the other shots, even more.

Well, the answer to the question isn't whether or not they practice it, but whether anyone's capable of shooting it at a high enough clip to warrant the shot. If for example Parsons is 30% 3pt shooter even when he's somewhat contested, then he needs to shoot 45% jumpshots to make those worthwhile. And 45% jumpshot is better than Scola's jumpshot, which was 43% even in his best year as a Rocket.

None of our guys are good enough at long 2's that we should look to take them.

If they happen in the flow, they happen, but to set out to do it? no

You know who would be good hitting the mid range shots? Jeremy Lamb
