I have been to Montevideo, Punta del Este and Colonia. It's pretty similar to Argentina. I didn't think Montevideo had much to offer that you would not have already seen if you had been in Buenos Aires. Colonia is kind of nice. Punta del Este is overrun with tourists in high season, and the beaches are not that spectacular. But you will see hot chicks. They consider it the St. Tropez of Latin America. My best friend when I was a kid was from Uruguay. He moved back as an adult for a little while. I get the impression it's mostly still a sleepy little backwater. I think of it as the Corpus Christi of South America. But, I haven't been there.

Thanks for the tips. Just got back from Uruguay today. Didn't make it Punta del Este or Colonia, but did go to Cabo Polonio, a coastal hippie village in the middle of nowhere. I'd definitely like to go back when the weather is a bit warmer-- beautiful country.
