Why is it such a big deal that someone is gay?

I watch the game because of the team chemistry, the energy and the sport. I don't watch it to determine who's gay and who isn't. It doesn't make a difference who is gay and who is not. Threads about this are just as pointless as a LOF ranting on how LIN doesn't touch the ball enough, or a bandwagon fan starting a thread about the rockets being the worst team ever, after losing one game in the playoffs.

Consider this a rant, but why does it matter that we know who is gay and who isn't?

Wasn't he part of the infamous Eddie Griffin trade? Which means we drafted him.

Anyway, dude played only a handful of games for the Wizards this past season. Good for him for coming out, but the true breakthrough for gays in professional sports will be when this happens with a high profile player.

Big day for gay athletes. Good for him. Hopefully this isn't the end of his career (given his age and without a contract).

That's the irony. He was practically not in the league this past season, so it's a distinct possibility no one will sign him for 2013-14. And even though homophobia will not be the reason, that could be the perception.

    Yep, they sound gay.

I'm only kidding. I agree, this should not be a big deal. Who really cares?

It shouldn't be, but it is. Same race, sex, etc. This is a great step, he's the first in the 4 main sports to come out. Good for him

Seriously? People will think his brother is gay now? Probably together with his twin, right? That's the dumbest thing posted so far in a thread destined to be full of them.

Good for him. If this allows him to finally live free and honestly with himself, it's a big personal step forward for him.

Hopefully we'll get to a point where one day nobody cares. Congrats to Collins, takes courage to be one of the first.

I wonder how this will affect his FA this year. Given that he has always been a marginal NBA player, and is 34, he may not get another contract.

I'm sure other gay athletes will be watching.

Dude, you seriously overrate the intelligence of humanity. Of course people are going to assume his twin is gay. They're stupid like that.
