Talking about having an existing star to attract other stars, it's where Phil's impact really comes through. If we have Phil and Harden, we become much more attractive destination for big name free agents. For that alone, Phil is worth 10 mil a year which doesn't count against cap(like free money as far as the fans should care about).

What are the odds that July 1st at 12:00 a.m., SVG is ringing Dwight's doorbell with Rockets' IPAD in hand, and Morey is ringing Josh Smith's doorbell?

I like McHale's style of coaching, and think he gets WAY too much criticism on this board without giving him any credit for the marvelous job he's done this season. With that being said, if bringing SVG in gets us Dwight, then I'm all for it. Bump McHale up to a front office position, and let SVG coach this team to the WCF.

    this thread is ridiculous...

morey has made it very clear that hes happy with the coaching staff...heck, look at what theyve accomplished...

mchale will be our coach unless he decides he wants to step down...besides, look at how our team plays for him. would i like JVG defense? sure. but keep stan outta here. great coach sure, but like another poster said, there will be "fire stan" threads within a week of his first games

Look at our roster. Then look at our record. Last night, we started just one player drafted in the first round, and no players with more than four years' experience, and we came within a missed call of taking the Thunder to overtime.

But yeah, by all means fire McHale...

Mchale will make some really blatant mistakes at times, but eventually it seems he learns from it and redeems himself. Thats what seperates him from the Kubiaks of the world. And he only has 3 years of experience I believe, so he should get better. I'm not exactly a fan of Mchale, just saying we shouldnt fire him based on his coaching alone. The only way would be we if we have another excellent coach in mind.

As far as Stan, I don't really recall him being a very good coach. I know he made it to the Finals in a really weak Eastern conf one year, but thats about it...

Stan is a good regular season coach

But is a giant post season choker.

They don't call him "Panic-Van-Gundy" for nothing

The Rockets have finished the season pretty terribly two years in a row so its not like McHale is showing that he is a great high pressure coach either.

I find it interesting that the people on this board that constantly hold McHale to fire for not putting more complexity into the offense now all of sudden want to take a chance on SVG. He's a hell of a defensive coach but on offense he's hardly an improvement.

Stan van Gundy is NOT the coach for this team. The Rockets need a young up beat energetic coach in the mold of Mark Jackson. Stan Van Gundy, like his brother, doesn't have the patience for a team this young. Theres no such thing as player development on a Van Gundy coached team. You guys think Mchale is grumpy? Well you obviously don't know SVG. He's only good on a team that scores 80pts a game

And that's who y'all want? In 5 years you'll be whining about the old days when McHale was so fun to play for. Smh

Can someone walk me through SVG's credentials. I mean, I know he took a team to the Finals, but is that enough? Avery Johnson took a team to a Finals and there seem to be a lot of people who don't care for his coaching.

I"m not saying SVG isn't a good or great coach... I just never watched closely enough to be sold.

And of course the issue with Dwight is ridiculous... short of Dwight very loudly and clearly saying to Rockets mgmt that not only am I interested in signing, but I really want SVG to be my coach, you clearly don't jeopardize any opportunity to sign Dwight.

That said, I can see Dwight saying the above. Dude consistently averaged 20 points, 13.5+ boards, and 2+ bpg under SVG. His experience has obviously been much worse under 2 coaches in LA thus far. The solid known coach may be (is?) better than the unknown.

Kevin McHale will be on board for another year. His contract will expire, and it won't be renewed. The brit will get promoted to head coach if he's ready, and if not, they'll pick up somebody with a strong defensive mentality who's receptive to the front office's advice on how to maximize our players' performance.

Me too. Favorite rockets coach. Rudy T is rolling in his grave because I just said that.

IMO i dont think that another van gundy will be with the rockets. I actually like SVG a lot, along with JVG. although i like mchale also, but people need to get their head checked when talking all of this crap about mchale. sometimes i do question his rotations, but every fan has their own opinion of how they would work the rotations. IMO keep mchale, the guy has worked his but off to get this team into the playoffs. i dont question mchale's character, and think that he is a great coach for bringing up the young guys. he is really a players coach, and has an old school philosophy to basketball and work ethic. not to mention the coaching staff we have is top notch, and are very underrated.

i would prefer keeping mchale, but if SVG comes along then im down to bring him on board.

I hate to break it to the McHale haters on here, but McHale will almost certainly be in Houston one more year. I can almost guarantee you that much.

If Dwight is coming to Houston its not strickly because of Van Gundy or even Phil Jackson for that matter. He's either coming or he's not. Its all about getting the max, playing with Harden, and most importantly, wanting to get out of LA(and give up money to do so).

After that Im not sure if Les & Morey will bring him back, but I would be willing to guess that they would want to keep him involved in the organization in another role if he was willing to accept.
