I'm guessing that this is the route we go with the 34th pick. Is anybody for or against this route? There's a lot of quality international players this year and some are now creeping into the first round. Just seeing everybody's interest in the international guys this year who will be available for the Rockets pick
Yes! Between Robinson, Dmo, Jones and winnebago we have enough projects. Either get an nba-reayd contributor like parsons or stash a euro.
Yep. It is entirely possible that a guy the Rockets have rated as a mid- to late first rounder falls to #34 (as Parsons did in 2011), in which case they'd likely take that player and worry about finding a roster spot for him later. Barring a guy from their draft board slipping, I think taking a "draft and stash" player is something they will seriously consider. The reason why many foreign guys fall into the second round relates more to signability and current overseas commitments than it does to their overall basketball talent relative to those selected several picks before them. Also, don't be shocked if the Rockets TRADE OUT of the draft entirely, picking up either a potentially better future pick (think heavily-protected future first rounder from a contender) or multiple future second rounders in the process. As has been mentioned, the Rockets already have plenty of young players and possibly a nearly-full roster for next season. Coming out of this year's draft without a player will not be a tragedy for the Rockets by any means. My guess is the Rockets themselves will not know what they are going to do exactly until the draft is well underway. Should be fun, though.
I'll be surprised if they don't trade out players like Dmo/Trob before next season. It's possible that they trade those for a pick or two in this draft. This darft is still fairly deep while it's not top heavy. I see multiple good prospects in late 1st and early second round. I'm not too confident, but there may even be a couple good ones in late second round.
This draft best spots 28 thru 35... There will be some decent players there... But by no means is this class deep at all... It is a very WEAk draft...
I think it all depends on who is there. I think there will be some NBA-ready college players there that could provide cheap depth as the FO looks to bring in a high-priced FA or two. Erick Green might be on the board. He could back up either guard spot and is a mature player. B.J. Young could be available. I don't think there was a faster player in college basketball with the ball in hands last year. His shot mechanics were changed (for the worse) from last year to this year, but he can get to the basketball. Excellent potential (though not NBA-ready). Allen Crabbe might fall into the 2nd round. He's probably big enough to also play some 3, while primarily playing the 2. Tim Hardaway might also be around. So, I think there's some college guards that I'd like to see the FO take a long look at, if available, but "draft and stash" would be an excellent choice in a draft like this. There's some big bodies out there (Jaiteh, Nogueira) and some guards (Abrines, Nedovic) that could be stashed. Rockets are in a good position in that they aren't really relying on getting a player at this spot, so they have many options with that pick. Should be interesting to see what happens.
List of Euros who've declared for the draft: http://www.europeanprospects.com/in...ft-information/nba-draft-2013-early-entrants/ I won't hop on the Dennis Schröder bandwagon just yet as I've only seen highlights, but I've only heard good things from local peeps & talent evaluators (Givony, Chad Ford, Fran Fraschilla, all the Euro media/scouts). Seems to fit the mold of what the Rockets are looking for in a PG. I think he'll definitely be in play, if he's still on the board at #34. Pretty sure Morey checked out Philipp Neumann & Sergey Karasev on his Europe trip. Probably has seen most of the other players as well.
These are interesting prospects, but I'm only seeing quality rotation players. It's less valuable to us, since Morey can always sign such players on cheap when they matured and reached their potential(like Beverly, Delfino, James...). The only international prospect worth a try maybe the Greece kid. I'd take Dieng/Eric Green/Muscala if they are available. As is they can be cheap rotational players hard to find in free agency. And each of them possesses pretty good potential IMO.
Is there a player that Rockets have stashed and actually played in the NBA? Scola was drafted by the Spurs. Furkan Aldemir Sergio Llull Maarty Leunen Brad Newley and that Israeli player (can't think of his name). I guess D-Mo was stashed for a year though.
I say we do 3 steps after the Playoffs ends. 1. Fire McHale and hire Phil 2. Trade Lin & Asik and one of our PF for first round Pick. and draft a PG. 3. Sign Howard and Vet PG. from FA. I m sure that Phil will get the best out of our young PF. Vet (FA) / Beverley / Rookie Harden / FA Parsons / Delfino T Jones / T Rob / Donuts Howard / FA
In the offseason Rockets need to trade one or two of the young PF's to maybe get a LaMarcus Aldridge... It is obvious Blazers TANK in the 2nd half of the season... I think TJones is Solid as a backup but Rockets need another Star player... Jeremy Lin needs to step it up as well...
Best case is DWH, but Morey tweeted sth along the lines of possibly getting 2more stars. That has to be getting 2 stars at the level of LA/JS/Milsap... with signing or trade. If so, there'll be a lot of fun next season.
While I enjoy your insights from time to time foreign players, I think it's a bit overly simplistic to say, on April 23, that ANY player is "the BY FAR clear choice". Heck, it's not even accurate. What if Nerlens Noel falls to #34? That's not going to happen most likely, but no one knows for sure yet how these prospects rate on on teams' draft boards, let alone how the draft will play out. (Don't mean to pick on you, just making a general comment that the draft is a complicated process with no easy answers, especially in April.) Even if it's "just" a quality rotation guy, the examples you cite don't necessarily lend credence to the notion that such players will definitely be readily available. Beverley WAS drafted. He just went through the unusual circumstance of getting signed by Miami then released to maximize cap room after The Decision in 2010. Delfino comes with a $3M price tag. Anderson was a former mid-first rounder who the Spurs only cut due to luxury tax/roster size issues (Pops always liked him). Getting the exclusive NBA rights to a quality NBA rotation player is nothing to scoff at. There is definite value in that. Also, at #34, I'm not sure what you expect from anyone available at that spot. Pretty much all the guys with super-high upside go in the first round, even if their bust potential is higher. Yes, D-Mo qualified. Also, don't forget Vassilis Spanoulis. Don't be surprised if Aldemir joins the Rockets next season.
