    could someone explain the technicalities behind what happened? I know that is dumb as **** but I thought you had to be grounded to complete the circuit. What exactly happened and why did it spark like that at that point?

    He was grounded. His hands were holding on to the metal pylon which is essentially grounded all the way down to the ground. Then he touched his feet to the live wire. Circuit complete.

    He never touched the conductor. It arced when he got within 5-6 feet of it. The arc was the huge flash. He would have been killed even if he would have jumped.


    Those lines can actually kill you even if you are not close enough (with an arc) for it to find a ground. If you fell out of the sky and grabbed one dressed like he was, you're dead.
