Apparently I am in the market for a new AC for my house. Hard to get any good information on the internet that seems reliable. Does anybody have any experience with AC's that could give advice on the best brand get (or brands to not get)? Thanks!
Are you looking at window units or for the whole house? I've had an LG window unit for years and it works great.
Don't get Goodman. Some of the more well known brands are Trane and American Standard. More expensive though.
I've had the same Trane for 18 years. It'll need to be replaced at some point, but as long as that puppy is cranking out the cold air, I'm holding off on that. It's needed just minor repairs here and there over the years, so I'd suggest one of those. Maybe we've just been lucky.
Supposedly trane are the most reliable and carrier the most innovative/efficient And like what was said above, stay away from goodman
American Standard is considered the best with most AC guys even though many different brands are made in the same facility and slapped with different name plates at the end of the assembly line.
May I ask why?. I got a great deal for a Goodman and it's worked for 5+ years no hassle. It's also based in Houston. I know A/C tech and it all comes down to parts eventually and they tell me Goodman will give you more bang for your buck.
I’m also looking for an a/c for one room. The only problem is I have burglar bars on my window, so I’m looking to get one of those portable a/c units. Has anyone here had any experience with one of these?
They've have a bad reputation. I'm sure there are people who've had good luck with them and had crappy with the other better thought of brands. But just going on reputation I'd stay away. But I'm not in the business so I'm just talking out of my ass basically.
Yes I have two different units from Sharp.. I chose the Sharp brand because of the great reviews, Name Brand, and the most quiet. Here is a link to some models. http://www.sharpusa.com/ForHome/HomeEnvironment/AirConditioners.aspx?view=browse Reviews are based off the Sharp Models I bought. Pros.. 1. Very Cold that my wife has to wear socks and bundles up in the blanket. 2. Fairly quite but this thing has moving parts and runs off electricity so it makes some noise.. I actually like it and it helps me fall asleep easier. 3. Sleek design 4. You do not have to empty any water at all.. Somehow it removes it through the exhaust. 5. Portable (room to room) 6. Make all changes on the controller Cons.. 1B. Portable AC are not as cold as window units. 2B. As stated above "no" dead silence, so if your a sensitive sleeper forget about it. It actually cycles on / off once it reaches it projected temp (you set). And you can definitley here the initial compressor come on. 3B. Nice deisgn but it is bulky and can take up some room 4B. When it goes through the exhaust phase you can hear the noise or different state of the machine. 5B. Forget about moving it up and down the stairs. Sucker is heavy. 6B. You can only make changes on the controller.. So if you lose it your SOL (Buy another controller) *Note* on 2B to avoid the cycle I just set it to the lowest setting and it just blast cold air constantly.. Reason I got the Portabl A/C was to set the whole house to 78-80 degrees and only set the room I sleep in to 65-70. Saves on electricity cost a lot.
If you're going to live in that house for 10+ years, consider an Amana. It's made by Goodman, but is a step up for the typical Goodman unit. It also has a lifetime warranty. I can't believe I'm suggesting this after Goodman laid me off.....
