Obama has got to be wondering what else he can do to move the needle. Bring a dead Newtown kid's body on stage? This demagoguery is supposed to work damnit.

    Or maybe something like this:

If you don't pass this bill....

Again, all he does is campaign, instead of actually rolling up his sleeves and putting in the hard work to work with congress. It's unbelievable how he tries to take the easy way out.

And the milking of the tragedy for all its worth is really growing old. Shameful how he keeps harping on this.

contrast his Chavez-style campaign rallies and demagoguery to Rand Paul and Ted Cruz's promise to mount a filibuster in the Senate to defend the 2nd Amendment.

I'm wondering if Harry Reid even wants to bring the bill to the floor to allow that event to happen.

It's all a dog and pony show. If the senate passes anything then great for the senate. The house won't pass squat. It wouldn't matter if the bill was proposed the seconds after Newtown. The house was never going to pass anything regarding gun control.

Rand and Cruz are full of it, and just putting on a show. The 2nd amendment isn't under attack, so they have nothing from which to defend it.

It is all meaningless posturing. The expanded background check was defeated today in the Senate. It would have done nothing significant anyway. The existing background check violations are not being prosecuted by the Justice Department (a former employer). Gun control affects law abiding citizens not criminals. Why is that so hard to understand? This whole hysterical charade is total nonsense.

The second amendment is not about hunting or sport shooting. It is about the right of citizens to defend themselves against a tyrannical government. It has already been grossly violated as we no longer have "musket for musket." The government has the citizenry massively "outgunned" which is actually quite terrifying. However, if the "government" ever turns on its citizens, it won't be pretty, nor easy.

    Major defeat for Obama

Just shows how out of touch he is

Then of course the sour grapes with his speech to Congress

again, he prefers this course rather than rolling up his sleeves and actually working. He's a lazy tool. He uses campaigning as a crutch way too much

has there ever been anybody as bad at governing than Obama? I guess we should have expected this from such an inexperienced greenhorn who's never held down a real job before entering politics.

I'm so sick of hearing this argument. Yeah criminals are gonna find a way to get their hands on guns, no s***. But do we have to make it incredibly easy for them to get them?

It boggles my mind how something like this gets defeated, how you can get vilified by the mere mention of guns and laws. It has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment, and everything to do with powerful lobbyists and the $$ they're representing.

90% of the country is in favor of universal background checks.

Americans know who defeated this bill. There will be reckoning in 2014. I'm looking at you Harry Reid

I cannot wait until we wrest congress from the NRA’s cold dead hands.

If a large majority of Americans support universal background checks, then I'd imagine it's the senators that voted no that are out of touch.

I don't understand the focus on a background check bill when Lanza would have failed existing background checks.

Love how the media and the far right are dancing this about as an Obama issue.

It's an NRA issue. Congratulations to the strongest special interest in the country, folks. They have "your" elected officials by the balls, if you can say these politicians indeed have such organs.

I happen to agree with the sentiments of these two intelligent gentlemen (via ABC website):

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, however, issued an angry statement on behalf of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

"Today's vote is a damning indictment of the stranglehold that special interests have on Washington," the group's statement said. "More than 40 U.S. senators would rather turn their backs on the 90 percent of Americans who support comprehensive background checks than buck the increasingly extremist wing of the gun lobby."

The governor of Connecticut, which has passed some of the strictest gun laws in America in the past month, questioned why senators would vote against a measure he believed to be very popular with the public.

"There is much more that needs to be done on the issue of gun violence prevention. But when the Senate cannot come together on an issue that is supported by the vast majority of Americans, there is little to no hope that common sense will prevail," Gov. Dan Malloy said in a statement. "The members who voted against this proposal should be ashamed of themselves."

But whatever. It was a tiny bill, symbolic really. It would have symbolized that something bipartisan could defeat the right wing / NRA blockade of all conversation.

It's strange how the conservatives are celebrating this as a victory. What have you won? The right for people to continue to buy firearms without a background check. Congrats? You see that as a cause for celebration?

Hard to believe that anyone with a brain could be opposed to this.
