To a certain extent they did. There was a controlled access VIP area and they had a much larger police presence and bomb sniffing dogs already on scene at the finish and start areas. That said at the finish it is still several blocks of hi-rises lining Boylston St. so you would sill be looking a a pretty large effort to control not only the ground area but also the buildings adjacent.
Nothing much to say till we know who did it. I do believe that either way it will be very expensive to the taxpayers and we will suffer some loss of freedom from this. We will probably see new regulations from the Fatherland Security and maybe airport rules if it turns out to be foreign involvement. The Feds politically have to pretend that they can always prevent things like this.
Short of declaring martial law there is no way of 100% preventing attacks like this. Part of the risk of having an open society where we can get together and have things like the Boston Marathon is that some people will take that opportunity to kill people.
i haven't read most of this thread, but I would like to make a parallel to Benghazi and all the political nonsense that was spewed here after that. We're now 24 hours after a similar event in the US where we've had our own people on the ground, our own direct news sources, and in a controlled non-war-zone - and we're STILL getting conflicting and incorrect information. Anyone who was charging that the White House was trying to cover up the "terrorism" angle of the Benghazi attack should think about that and consider how much less reliable the info we would have been when getting from half a world away where we have limited eyes & ears, and how long it might take to sort out fact from fiction, or how they might be being told things that turn out incorrect later on.
I doubt that. It's a race with 20k runners, and each one has multiple friends and family members that want to come see them finish. Are you going to search each one as they enter the secured perimeter? That sounds like an impossibly large job. I think the only way to actually make it safe is to cancel the Marathon. I don't envy the job of whoever it is in charge of security for the Boston Marathon and similar events in the US. The job was already hard, and now there will be additional pressure to institute more security.
but it might be best to block containers (mailboxes, trash cans) and disallow backpacks along the area in the future.

Except as it turned out there wasn't conflicted information coming INTO the White House about Benghazi, just out of it. But, if your point is that the White House is as trustworthy as blood thirsty American reporters, then you won't get an argument from me!
Notice how the "Special Report" background is red and is bleeding. This might be due to this fool using ancient technology (recording tv video) using a phone or camcorder. Notice how his camera magically moves as soon as the man walks by. This changes the camera angle and could have removed the red glare or bleeding. They guy obviously has that portion of the news recorded in his dvr which he can directly save to his computer. Why does he resort to using a camera to show this? Because he can manipulate what is being recorder.
From what we know, the CIA sent the WH talking points that said they believed it was a video-inspired attack a few days after the attack. We also know the CIA was processing information leaning towards premeditated terrorism and may have indicated that to the WH. Right there, we have two conflicting reports from the same agency. That doesn't include the DIA or whatever other agencies may have been sending info.
I don't see where the problem is with Blitzer's comment. Even people on fox news brought it up several times. It wasn't a comment that needs an apology. Every single angel needs to be viewed, and hate CNN or whatever, but he was not out of line one single bit with the comment. Whoever thinks he needs to apologize for that comment needs to go play in traffic.
That is going to be very difficult for a few reasons. First any large even generates a lot of trash so just for convenience and sanitation purposes they are going to need trash cans. They could possibly locate the trash cans to another location away from the race route but given that you have sidewalk and building along a lot of the route that might not be possible. Mailboxes might be moved though. Banning backpacks and other large bags is going to raise a firestorm of complaints. For anybody who has ran or been to one of these races there are a lot of people along the route who set up ad hoc aid stations for friends and family or just for any runner. Also since these are family events parents are going to want to bring along diapers and other stuff for their kids. Finally people wanting to capture the even will be bringing along a lot of camera gear. The only thing I can see that may be practical is increasing surveillance along the route with more cameras and bomb sniffing dogs or other technology to try to find explosives. Even with those I think it will be impossible to prevent every possible attack.
That is some amazing, yet pointless photoshopping. With skills like that, he should have better things to do with his time than to deceive a bunch of people.

I think it is difficult, but trash cans can be used that are transparent. You can mandate use of approved containers such as plastic bottles, and if is known that no backpacks are allowed and you can't do that then what about clear bags? This is so etching that while inconvenient would have made the placement of the bomb a tough thing. Solution like I said is clear bags if carrying items has to be done. Sure it is something people will complain over, but theses are just security measures that I am proposing that should mitigate how a terrorist can place something unattended. I think that could help but by itself is least effective but does works best thru combing my recommendations. You can never prevent every attack or desire but you make it very difficult by mandating clear receptacles, clear carry bags, combined with increase surveillance along the race route.
