Wow. "life, legacy and example" huh? Yeah, the GOP is definitely not playing politics with her death.

Give me a break. Her legacy is a right-wing fantasy and a progressive's nightmare. Our government should not be recognizing her legacy and example.

Note her service to the crown and move on, (if you feel compelled to waste our tax dollars in yet a new way).

I agree with Glenn Greenwald and Christopher Hitchens on how to treat the passing of a public figure.

You can't whitewash a legacy when someone dies. If anything, it's dangerous and irresponsible. What they represented in life continues after their death and if you deify them with this sort of ban on criticism, you aren't much better than the Soviets parading Lenin's entombed carcass and punishing all snark with the gulag. Ok, maybe not quite as bad, but the (lack of) logic is the same.

I completely agree that the idea of not speaking ill of the dead is in good taste, but not if they are a political figure and their name stands for something other than their private lives.

Should we apply the same protocol to Hugo Chavez? Saddam Hussein? Muammar Gaddafi? Augusto Pinochet? How 'bout good ole Francisco Franco? They WERE heads of state and had families...

Thatcher was probably one of the most controversial politicians of the 20th century, and incredibly divisive. To pretend otherwise would be irresponsible and no obituary is going to be very well written without mentioning things that may be less than flattering. She wasn't the former treasurer of the local Lion's Club or a pet groom shop owner.

Yes obviously those who did not like her are behaving inappropriately, as opposed to those who like her.

The most interesting thing, I think, is that Thatcher herself would probably oppose this (unless it wasn't her).

I'm going to chalk this up to lack of research.
