Well, I don't know about that. They took something that already existed, cleaned it up (albeit by accident since Nevermind was overly produced), and really pushed the use a distortion pedal in strategic spots, then introduced it to the mainstream. It always spawned countless copycats. Even if they didn't innovate, how many bands do? Is that an essential requirement to greatness? Don't think so... Corgan was a perfectionist, took something that existed then turned it into a masterpiece. For 2 albums at least.
