Yes, really. Calorie per calorie, this can vary wildly depending on what you're buying and where you're buying it from.
I think another reason (along with the obvious ones listed) is our car-oriented culture. Many US cities do not have any public transportation to speak of (including Houston) and riding around from door to door in a car is more conducive to getting fat than riding around on public transportation/walking. Source: whenever I'm in Boston, I lose weight. Whenever I'm in Houston, I gain weight lol.
I'm not the least bit fat. I guess I'm an outlier. My Significant Other thinks it's unfair that I can eat whatever I want and still stay within a couple of pounds of what I've weighed for many years. It's weird. Of course, I take 40 mgs of Lipitor a day due to an inherited genetic flaw (yes, I have more than the obvious flaw of spending too much time around here) that would have my cholesterol at 600+ and my triglycerides at 1200+ if I didn't take that everyday. I also take excellent vitamins and supplements. Have no clue if all that stuff has a positive impact on my weight, but I'm still here, and still weighing what I weighed 20 years ago. Don't really watch my diet. I used to, but not so much any longer. Today, my cholesterol is at 173 and my triglycerides are at 200, with an excellent HDL/LDL ratio. Seeing as how I'm "middle-aged" (actually, a bit beyond that), I'm pretty happy about it, and about weighing less than most every other friend of mine that's my size and my age. The Country seems Fearful of Fat, yet it eats too much. Bummer! Nice thread, texxx. Sorry I ruined it for you. ;-)-
Hater, don't call my advice ignorant. You can make this post and get the same message across: Use the pyramid to learn about the different food groups. Forget the servings. The only one you should use the suggested servings for is for the fruits and veggies and that should be a minimum. Keep the D&D beef in the D&D. Maybe it's not D&D beef. It's possible the guy is just angry all the time.
Please tell me where you can buy a single flour bun, 3 oz of beef and a slice of cheese? Unless you are serving a family or eating burgers over a few days, it costs much more than that.
maybe thats why i dont get that much weight when i go on vacation to NY or SFO..compared to austin
Mainstream society seems to encourage over consumption of food, fast food and discourage an active lifestyle.
I think everyone over the age of 10 is familiar with the concept of fruits, veggies, dairies, grains, and meats.... The whole purpose of the food pyramid is to tell you what portions of each you should eat and it absolutely fails at that. I am not angry and your comment was blatantly incorrect (As Commodore said). Sweet potatoes will make you just as fat as white potatoes. Brown rice will make you just as fat as white rice. I am trying to make sure anyone on the thread who wants to loose weight doesn't follow your advice.
If you reread the post I was responding too you wrote: So in other words you have no specific data driven evidence.
If you read in my post though just showing that there are more percentage wise obese people among a certain group doesn't mean that they are accepting of obesity. As I said Texans are more obese percentage wise than Minnesotans but I don't think that means that Texans are more accepting of obesity. There may be a lot of other factors leading to why one group is more obese than the others than that they just accept obesity. Is there any polling regarding what the attitudes of these groups are regarding obesity and / or polling regarding body image?
troll, troll, troll your boat never claimed I had evidence on the cultural acceptance of blacks and hispanics and fatness. I was referring to the fact that they're statistically more obese I'll have to add annoyingly correcting others like a nanny to your other posting theme of injecting Asia everywhere you possibly can
A few years ago a Japanese student and Judo player did a year at St. Cloud State in Minnesota. After two months he went up in weight in three weight classes. He said American food was just too good.
Actually yes you did. Wasn't there a poster who liked to say that when you resort to insults you lose the argument? Now who could that be?
This is proof that you cannot read. 1. I did not claim to post data that says blacks and hispanics culturally approve of obesity. You misinterpreted and assumed a meaning of my post that wasn't there. 2. I didn't insult you. I insulted what you did -- the action. See the difference? An insult would be if I called you a know-it-all dwarf who likes to correct everybody. I didn't call you that. I insulted your behavior, which is a big difference. have a nice day
Black and mexican cuisine use a lot of lard and deep frying for a staple of comfort dishes. Also, if the culture started off impoverished or oppressed, there's more of an inclination to choose lower choice cuts and parts of the animal white people don't normally eat. It's been like that for so long that it becomes an acquired taste, which isn't a good thing, since food is a major component inside a culture. As one starts operating outside it even for health reasons, he/she can be met with resistance by other people of the same culture. Caucasian Americans don't normally find resistance to the last part, as the options and tastes for food is wide and plenty, but it's still around with assimilated cultures.
