Place Beyond the Pines : 8.5/10 I had low expectations coming in and it blew my mind how good this movie was. It is not your typical movie. I would call it a modern crime epic.
Zero Dark Thirty - very good movie. Loved the way it built up towards the end even when you knew what was going to happen, 8/10.
Just watched this for the first time today. Not my cup of hot chocolate, but damn that's what I call a performance! Everybody was gunning for an Oscar in that movie. It's a very well written story and awesome dialogues. I'd give it a solid 8.5/10, just because I don't particularly like this genre. But can't deny it's a classic. Next up, is Rise of the Guardians. Will watch it later this week. Good thread.
I watched Prometheus yesterday night. I was highly entertained but confused. Maybe because i had not watched the alien movies since I was a teenager. Was the engineer the same guy they found in "Alien"? the ship looked horseshoe-ish, like the one in alien. 7 stars out of 10
Life of Pi 9.5/10 I can't really think of any movie I would call a 10/10, so I will give this one as close to it as I can. I went into this knowing as little as possible, other than the little I knew from the previews, and I think that was a good thing. There is enough in this movie to spoil, and enough left open to interpretation, that I will not get into anything specific here. What I will say is this: this movie was a rare treat. In this day and age, I can't think of the last time a movie treated its subject matter and characters with so much *respect* and *dignity*, and did so completely free of the ham-handed pedagoguery so common in movies now. The fact that it dealt seriously with concepts and beliefs intelligently and almost tenderly, so unlike the shrill mockery which Hollywood usually serves up, made this movie refreshing and surprising. I think this is a film everyone should see. Highest recommendation!
No, it was just a confusing movie in general. <object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/k-YjyI2_K30?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/k-YjyI2_K30?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
That's disappointing. It has a 72% on rottentomatoes so I'll still check it out. However, I know that movie reviewers hate to give a bad review to an American icon's life story so that might have something to do with it.
Oblivion - 8/10 I really liked it. Gave it an extra grade because I couldn't guess the twist. I'm glad Tom Cruise is a major scientologist because he keeps doing these Alien movies. Plus frigging Victoria is really beautiful. If I were Tom Cruise in the movie, I'd never go out scouting the Earth, I'd just stay home and bang her all day and night. I'm gonna check out more movies with her. Spoiler
Lone Star 7/10 - very solid movie from the mid 90's with Matthew McConaughey, Kris Kristofferson, Chris Cooper. Its about a investigation that reveals a 40-year-old murder in a Texas border town.
It's not a movie, but I watched Aziz Ansari's Dangerously Delicious stand-up show on Netflix last night. I hadn't laughed that hard in a while, 10/10.
