You said that he has top 10 PG potential, I vociferously disagree with that his sample is way to small for any reasonable person to make such a bold statement. That is all. I also disagree that he is one of the best back up PG's in the NBA. Reggie Jackson, Andre Miller, Jarret Jack, Bledsoe all better than him. I do agree with you though that he has a lot of potential & will only improve. I am not making this a Bev vs Lin argument so let's not put words in my mouth. I didn't even bring up Lin Aruba did. I just don't understand how you can use a 636 minute sample to jump to such conclusions. That is way to premature. I did say that Bev has talent & that he has a very high upside & will only get better like all young players do. I just disagree with the assertion that he has top 10 pg potential.
Key word is "potential". We talk about players' potential all the time without them playing even a single minute. What is fairly clear about Beverley is he has a crazy motor and he's pretty damn athletic. He's also been surprisingly effective at the start of his NBA career on both ends. That's enough for people to go on when talking potential. That said, lots of players have potential and don't amount to anything. Its not something that is worth vociferously disagreeing with.
I said his "ceiling" is rounding out the top 10. That's best case. It is a bold statement, but it's just an opinion.
Well you are more than entitled to your opinion & I respect it. I am just sitting here thinking to myself what Bev has shown that I am not seeing. But to each his own.
Prigioni is a starter now so............ but, he was a backup earlier. Even at age 36, Prigioni is way better than Beverley is. But I guess since he's a starter bow, he does not count in that.
I think he is the perfect backup, I like my pg to be more creative and able to see the floor like Lin can. It's obvious by watching the game that Beverley doesn't have the same play making ability as Lin. Coach I understand you liking Beverley and wanting him to get better and get more time, all of us have players that we like beyond reason. Myself for example, I still think that Dmo will end up being our best pf next year.
Me liking Beverley has nothing to do with my point. Look at it this way: Beverley starting = a few more stops Lin off the bench = a few more points.
April Averages Patrick Beverley 5.5 points 2.5 rebounds 4.2 assists 0.3 steals 43.8% field goals 0.0% free throws 33.3% three-point range Toney Douglas 9.4 points 3.0 rebounds 3.8 assists 2.8 steals 50.0% field goals 1,000% free throws 46.7% three-point range One guy is shooting more accurately and playing better defense down the stretch.
One is an NBA vet who has been on multiple teams. The other is an NBA rookie who blocks shots like a center.
Don't jinx him! Please let Bev develop under 'normal' circumstances, coming off the bench as a rookie. Why place unwarranted expectation? Remember Mach 5? Machado was never the same player after you made this thread... http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=227332
Douglas is a legitimately good shooter. He kind of plays out of control at times but given a limited role he would be an awesome guard playing off of Harden and Lin. Beverley and Lin both have the same problem in that they've never been good shooters and their mechanics seem to indicate at least visually that they'll never be elite outside shooters. Of course, plenty of players have bucked this trend and become great catch-and-shoot three ballers later in their career so we'll have to wait and see.
What is ridiculous is that Beverley and Douglas average 4 assists off of the bench. Man, both are great back-up PGs. I like Beverley more than Douglas, but Douglas was shaping up to be a good fit for this team. Beverley is offensively much more limited than I thought him to be, and when Harden & Lin both stink up the joint we don't really have someone to bail us out.
Lin is shooting right around 40% from beyond the arc in the last 3 months, I call that good shooting and Beverley is shooting is shooting 38% for the season from beyond the arc, I also call that good shooting. I'm a big fan of Beverley I just don't think he needs to start.
Beverley and Lin are often selective with the threes they take (passing on plenty of open looks) and are the beneficiaries of clean spot up looks. It will be interesting to see an advanced breakdown of threes taken to see amount of shots overall, shots taken as spot-up vs. off-the-dribble, amount of times passed on open look (obviously I'm aware this last one is impossible). Lin and Beverley are doing well and more than adequately currently but raw fg% isn't entirely indicative of how great someone is at shooting threes.
And anybody who thinks Beverley should start over Lin is silly. I've always been interested in seeing Harden & Lin's rotational minutes managed so that at least one of them is on the court at all times because imo we are a better team with at least one of them running the offense. It's just usually been easier in the case of two ball dominant guards, for one of them to start off the bench to attenuate the problem. I wouldn't be bothered seeing it in future provided Lin doesn't have a marginalised role but Beverley is definitely not the starting PG people here think he is. Beverley is an energy hustle player like Bledsoe, Bradley, Cole, Douglas. These guys aren't starting caliber PGs even alongside ball dominant wings but they're awesome bench players.
Beverley appears to have the physical tools to be a top 10 player i.e. lightning fast, insanely athletic & strong but he doesn't have the talent or skills as an existing blueprint to be considered top 10 potential. Top 10 - Lateral quickness - Straight-line drive speed - Strength - Athleticism and vertical Problems - Limited court vision - Difficulty maintaining tempo of game - Can't run an offense - Struggles to score - Prone to snowballing his mistakes Not enough to indicate he's top 10 potential. Kyrie Irving and Stephen Curry as examples have average/ mediocre physical talent but their games are so well developed that it more than compensates for this.
