Yeah, I don't see Kubiak's offense as requiring, or even taking advantage of, a mobile QB. Despite his limitations, Schaub actually rolls out pretty well. A mobile QB would help when the pocket or a play breaks down, but that's something that's outside the design of the offense.
Damnit I don't know how to embed videos: http://youtu.be/_LiNu65-nMw The whole Patriots game is on youtube and even though its hard to stomach its an evenly crappy effort. Hurry up and watch it before the NFL finds out and sues the f*** out this dude LoL: http://youtu.be/I9pv6aqXcZ8
Watching it now, my boss is in meetings all day so he shouldn't come in my office, I'm not gonna be productive today LoL...Schaub overthrows Andre so much, its so frustrating to watch...good God our secondary is horrendous
Good God its Schaub thats the problem. He's so inaccurate. I feel like his poor play took the air out of the rest of the team. Looking at Andres body language and Fosters body language after consistently being overthrown and under thrown, they don't give up but they don't look optimistic. We gotta get a QB in here. I wouldn't be mad if the Texans drafted Tyler Bray in the second...
I need something to motivate me to get excited about the Texans again. This wasn't it. Every time I think about Kubiak and Schaub, I feel depressed. So predictable, unexciting. Best I can do is try to focus on Watt. It's a struggle.
Look at it this way. There are more guys on this team who are getting better than guys who are getting worse, or even plateauing. It's very possible that Brandon Brooks and Derek Newton improve a good deal this year, which opens up a lot of options for the offense (whether the coaches should or will choose to use those options is up for debate). I'm excited about this team, because they stomped quite a few mudholes last year even with some glaring deficiencies. Arian cannot possibly be as bad as 20th in YPC again, Cushing will be back, Reed adds some leadership to a very young and inexperienced secondary. Yes, there will always be matchup problems, but that's life in the NFL. Every team has its nemeses. If we can avoid New England, we have every right to think we're the favorite to go to the Superbowl. All things considered, that's not a bad place to be in life.
Really, all these people constantly wringing their hands about Schaub need to relax. It's so pedestrian (not to mention DULL) to just blame all the team's problems on the QB. Charlie Pallilo said it best - The Texans can win a Superbowl with Matt Schaub as their QB. It won't be because of him, but they can still win one.
2 years ago Kubiak was a genius, now his offense is staid and boring. Or so say the critics. My opinion? We've been upgrading our personnel on defense and letting the offensive talent stagnate a bit.
agree with the first part. but the second part from charlie p, a man who believes the rockets had no chance against the bulls had mj not retired, is just wrong. If we did win a superbowl, schaub would have to be a big part of it, along with every position. his statement is just a cop out to trash schaub. Superbowl winning teams have contributions from all over. Steve young needed hall of famer galore at every defensive position to finally lift that monkey of his back. I do think it's time to start looking for a qb high in the draft after this season, if yates isn't the guy.
I think what he's getting at is that you can win a Superbowl without a top 5-type QB. If the defense plays like it did in 2011 and Schaub just plays slightly better than average and doesn't make any huge mistakes, there's no reason why we can't win it all. Personally, I think if Schaub stays healthy in 2011, we would've at least made it to the SB.
What's surprising is that we now have near conclusive evidence that if Schaub plays well overall (meaning he might have a clunker here or there but is generally above average week-in and week-out), the Texans win. When he's either hurt (the final 8 games of '11) or consistently ineffective (the final 6 games of '12), they don't. They're 6-8 in the 14 games he was out/bad; 18-4 otherwise. We absolutely *know* that a, at the very least, competent Matt Schaub is integral to this team winning.
I think that often...that may have been their real shot. The run game was just so good and the defense was lights out.
Is this really a revelation, though? This is a passing-first league. You can sometimes win without great defense or without a great running game, but is there any team that wins consistently without good QB play? The reason the "elite QB" argument continues is that is it increases the likelihood of consistently good QB play, which is arguably the single most critical element to winning; it's not all you need, but it's hard to see winning without it.
How do you define good QB play? Over the past 5 years, Schaub has pretty consistently had a QBrating in the 90s, a completion percentage in the mid 60s, y/a in the mid 7's, and about twice as many TD's as INTs.
I'd say that's generally good play - and when he does that and they have a great defense and great running game, they tend to win. When he doesn't, they tend to lose. I just don't think that's terribly new information, either with the Texans or any other team.
The Ravens won the Super Bowl with strong running game, defense and above average QB against a team with the strongest running game, defense and above average QB. The Giants won a couple times in recent years with same elements. Texans approach isnt THAT "outdated". But its stubbornly being married to the system without adjustments that'll hold back just that 5-10% more thats needed to get over the hump. Maybe its not the system so much as the personalities running it. The Patriots DEFENSE was the WEAKEST unit of the 2 teams (besides Texans special teams). Meaning a mediocre Patriots defense should be vulnerable. Patriots had a bend but don't break kinda D, gave up a lot of yards but not as much points. But a good offensive team should expose it. Thats against the Texans offense. THEN yes, Wade should get some blame instead of none. Tom Brady shreds blitzes so consistent blizes against Tom Brady and their fast break scheme was playing right into their hands. But when that approach produces a DPOY its kinda hard to knock it outright.
Schuab's problem, and by extension Texans offense problem, is touchdowns. That's what has separated our offense with top offenses. We can't score TDs. The only year in which this hasn't been the problem was when Foster/running game was beastly. Schaub can't throw them. The Texans ZBS generally fizzle inside the redzone, and only Foster's amazing running has remedied this. Something we stopped seeing last year with our oline issues. In basketball terms, we're like Asik. Get a lot of opportunities inside the paint, but rarely convert. Also, while you don't need an elite QB to win a SB, your QB has to perform like an elite QB in the playoffs or your defense needs to. The Texans had that elite defense for one year in their existence, last season. Could've gone on a TB/Giant-like run with Schaub in there.
Sure I would love to get a new QB, but we should all know that isn't happening anytime soon... Kubiak is a pathetic head coach, and his deficiencies can be exploited by any competent coach who understands how to gameplan. He is way too stuck in his simple-minded ways...incapable of making in-game adjustments to help us win. Does anyone else remember that MNF game in 2010 against Indy when we ran a QB sneak on 4th and almost 2 yards because that idiot was so caught up in the play calling that he thought it was 4th and 1/2 yard?!? (THAT WAS BASICALLY HIS EXACT EXPLANATION FOR IT AFTER THE GAME!!! THAT HE GOT SO CAUGHT UP IN THE MOMENT, HE DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE THE ACTUAL DOWN AND DISTANCE!!!) Hopefully the team can turn the corner, but Kubes needs to grow up and stop acting like he is the offensive coordinator. The HC is responsible for much more than just play calling, and he needs to step it the **** up if we really are going to make a deep playoff run.
