Anyone happen to have/know a list of Houston's draft picks/trades since Morey has been GM? I'm in the middle of an argument with a friend of mind involving DM and his ability to hit players in the draft. And we want to figure out what his hit/miss rate is. I tried a simple google search and got this: Spoiler 2012 NBA 1 12 Jeremy Lamb University of Connecticut 21 93 50 9 3 .359 .450 1.000 4.4 2.4 0.4 0.1 0.3 .140 2012 NBA 1 16 Royce White Iowa State University 2012 NBA 1 18 Terrence Jones University of Kentucky 15 185 72 43 9 .439 .286 .769 12.3 4.8 2.9 0.6 0.4 .106 Year Lg Rd Pk Player College G MP PTS TRB AST FG% 3P% FT% MP PTS TRB AST WS WS/48 2011 NBA 1 14 Marcus Morris University of Kansas 90 1594 625 283 60 .412 .360 .595 17.7 6.9 3.1 0.7 1.8 .053 2011 NBA 1 23 Nikola Mirotic 2011 NBA 2 38 Chandler Parsons University of Florida 136 4450 1716 691 389 .470 .369 .664 32.7 12.6 5.1 2.9 9.8 .106 Year Lg Rd Pk Player College G MP PTS TRB AST FG% 3P% FT% MP PTS TRB AST WS WS/48 2010 NBA 1 14 Patrick Patterson University of Kentucky 183 4034 1528 808 168 .495 .373 .728 22.0 8.3 4.4 0.9 8.0 .095 Year Lg Rd Pk Player College G MP PTS TRB AST FG% 3P% FT% MP PTS TRB AST WS WS/48 2008 NBA 1 25 Nicolas Batum 328 9492 3656 1405 685 .449 .372 .840 28.9 11.1 4.3 2.1 24.5 .124 2008 NBA 2 54 Maarty Leunen University of Oregon Year Lg Rd Pk Player College G MP PTS TRB AST FG% 3P% FT% MP PTS TRB AST WS WS/48 2007 NBA 1 26 Aaron Brooks University of Oregon 324 7801 3772 586 1106 .416 .364 .844 24.1 11.6 1.8 3.4 12.5 .077 2007 NBA 2 54 Brad Newley Year Lg Rd Pk Player College G MP PTS TRB AST FG% 3P% FT% MP PTS TRB AST WS WS/48 2006 NBA 1 8 Rudy Gay University of Connecticut 508 18348 9115 2944 1036 .449 .341 .777 36.1 17.9 5.8 2.0 30.2 .079 2006 NBA 2 32 Steve Novak Marquette University 355 4716 1878 494 105 .445 .435 .886 13.3 5.3 1.4 0.3 12.7 .129 The issue here is this Rudy Gay, Mirotic, Batum all never played a minute for us and were traded that offseason or on draft day. Also there are guys missing like Landry, Motiejunas, Dorsey (a miss), Budinger... and I'm probably forgetting a few guys. Perhaps we could include undrafted free agents as well because Hayes, Smith, Beverly and Anderson have all contributed in some way.
Looks like it doesn't take trades into account. I think you got everyone except for Jermaine Taylor (miss).
That's the thing... we're going to forget a lot of the misses. And there are a lot of second round picks that we just stashed overseas that we never hear about and those should be counted as a miss because we used a pick on said player and the guy didn't pan out.
Here is everything you need to know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Houston_Rockets_first_and_second_round_draft_picks
It's hard to rank some of them. Example: Carl Landry or Brooks. They were huge getting us to the second round, which makes them very high-value picks. But, after they left, they significantly declined. But, then you have guys like Chuck Hayes and Beverly who were not drafted (which is better than a good draft pick, IMO) which makes up for the Pattersons or Dorseys. I am pretty sure this is where it starts. 2006 1 8 Rudy Gay 2006 2 32 Steve Novak 2007 1 26 Aaron Brooks 2007 2 31 Carl Landry 2007 NA NA Luis Scola 2007 2 54 Brad Newley 2008 1 25 Nicolas Batum 2008 2 33 Joey Dorsey 2008 2 54 Maarty Leunen 2009 2 32 Jermaine Taylor 2009 2 34 Sergio Llull 2009 2 44 Chase Budinger 2010 1 14 Patrick Patterson 2011 1 14 Marcus Morris 2011 1 23 Nikola Mirotić[w] 2011 2 38 Chandler Parsons 2012 1 12 Jeremy Lamb 2012 1 16 Royce White 2012 1 18 Terrence Jones 2012 2 44 Furkan Aldemir (from Los Angeles Clippers)
I think that's most of the list. I think it's easy to rate them on pure hit/miss basis. Players we traded away obviously don't count. So that means if you don't count D-Mo or any of the other rookies (too soon to tell IMO), I count Parsons, Morris, Patterson, Budinger, Landry, Brooks, Novak. That's 7 players out of 13 that qualify (so not counting Scola, Batum, Gay, D-Mo or anyone from 2012).
It's interesting to see what Morey's best and worst moves are in this http://hoopshype.com/general_managers/daryl_morey.htm Personally, best is Harden and worst was Ariza, but I could see the argument for Francis.
Why do you have to bring this up? I was just settling on how great Morey is at making the deal. That is his specialty. Finding GM's who need help in clearing cap and raping them. Drafting is not his specialty. Especially 1st round picks. Even this year I wanted John Henson and we got Lamb. Yeah Lamb can shoot but sharp shooters or not that hard to find in this league. 6'11" guys who can block shots and get you 10 rebounds a night are. Last year we got Morris when Kawhi Leonard and Vucevic were available. The year before we got PPat, I love the guy but we could have Larry Sanders. The year before we got Donte Greene when we could have had Nicolas Batum. And I won't even mention Royce White because it appears to be influenced by McHale. And DMo and T Jones are pretty good. But overall not a good track record. Still he seems to fix a lot of that damage by making great trades. And a lot of GM's have bad track records in drafting. So he is still my choice as GM of the year.
you have to adjust those lists for trades. Batum, Mirotic, Gay... it's like saying that the old Hornets management were awesome drafters because they picked Kobe Bryant.
All these lists keep giving us batum even though the guy Morey wanted and ended up with was Greene. You guys are taking other trades into account but not this one. That was a miss but at least he flipped it for artest.
Well, I pointed to moves like drafting Brooks, Landry, Parsons, Buddinger, Novak... all past the 24th pick. The guy I was arguing with claimed that we have more draft picks and therefore that inflates the number of hits, so I was trying to find an average hit/miss rate. And I actually worked the numbers and it seems like Morey is a little under par for what the league average is. I suppose if we were to look at the entire draft after pick 14 we would be fine, but the highest density of picks for Houston are in between 14 and 38.
That's funny... Carroll Dawson said it was JVG who insisted. And it's been generally agreed that had the Rockets kept the pick, they wouldn't have selected Rudy Gay. They wanted Thabo Sefolosha. Plus Daryl Morey was just hired as an assistant to CD.
I suppose Morey should get credit for some of those. But the reality is Brooks and Budinger were Adelmans picks. he had to go over Morey straight to Les for Budinger. CD was the GM when Novak was drafted. Landry was under Morey but CD and his staff where the ones credited for scouting Landry and finding him. Parsons was all Morey. but so was Dorsey and Morris and greene and PPat and Royce whte and Jeremy taylor and LLUll. But he also gets crdit for terrence Jones, DMO and lamb. I like TJones and DMo.
It's a bit hard to figure. Like Lamb helped us get Harden. Do the Thunder make that deal without him? Maybe, maybe no. Dorsey and Landry helped us get Martin, who helped us get Harden. Heck, that doesn't even get into how we got the picks we traded for him. This **** is complicated!
