If the US nukes first then we risk a complete deterioration of our relationship with every major power in that region.

We don't have the troops necessary to invade NK. Our only chance for victory would be a sustained bombing campaign with the implied threat that all military leaders would be pardoned if they staged a revolt and whacked their dear leader.

Except recent escaped North Koreans are now confirming that there is a huge power struggle and rival factions fighting for control in North Korea. Kim Jong Un may very well just be a figurehead to give the illusion he is still in control to the pro-Kim population of NK.

Its a complete mess over there.

It's quite possible longtime military leaders are the most fearful of the NK government falling because they are the ones with the most blood on their hands. For all we know, Kim wants to make a deal but knows he would quickly contract a "fatal illness" followed by cremation if he tried.

It's interesting how the press seems to attribute everything NK does to Kim Jong Un like he's some kind absolute monarch. Yeah right.

This thread has taken a very ugly term the last few pages. All of the ridiculous nationalistic and bigoted talk here pretty much mirrors what is coming out of NK.

Wow, I thought that kind of history wasn't taught in Japan.

Maybe the five years thing was in some sad sack anime series because subsequent references to unpleasantries are lacking in the details.

You bet your ass it's a slur. Half a century ago, the American government rounded up people whom they wouldn't be able to differentiate from you by looks, seized their land, liberty and welfare without probable cause under the still constitutional blanket of war powers.

It's a hateful American term and you should be Americanized enough to know it...or at least not being willfully sleazy at using it on purpose then hiding behind dumb****ery when you're called out on it.

I read some article posted here a decade ago (last last time or last last last time...?) about NK having **** loads of artillery embedded in the mountains all pointed at Seoul.

The US might have nuclear superiority to vaporize bases and launch sites, but I don't know if our current response could subdue the dumb weapon onslaught pointed at ~25 million people.

That's their best bargaining chip atm. Any such war would cause disruptions to our beloved iTool product lines and computers.

I haven't thought of any clear situation that would grant them prestige and some hope of legacy to carry out their "crazy" plans, but this is the far scarier scenario as a botched power play could be the likelier flashpoint in carrying out their universally accepted bad threats if only to rally all of their divided generals into a corner to fight and die.

All of their grandstanding points towards appearing to be feared and respected world player. They already saw what a real war did to Saddam.

It's true at the time, and it'll be true again if that blight ever happens in the future.

I wouldn't be as naive to assume that an American war in Asia would be assumed as a war of nationalities by the greater public. That distinction sure went well after 9/11...

    Definitely equal comparison here.

He's talking about World War II, and you bet your ass that if you looked "Asian," then you were at risk of an ass kicking, or not being waited on, or even being tossed into a concentration camp, which unjustly happened to huge numbers of loyal Japanese Americans. What would make you happy? That we just ignore history? That would be idiocy writ large. My father saw combat in the Pacific during WWII, against the Japanese, and I grew up hearing about the war. Do a search of American WWII propaganda films and Hollywood films made during the war on the internet and then get back to us. If you were Asian in the States then, you weren't a happy camper. We were freaked out by Pearl Harbor and saw Japanese saboteurs everywhere. Fair? Of course not, but people were freaked out and overreacted, including the goverment.

I don't recall families of German or Italian decent getting rounded up at any point in WW2.

I'm guessing that's because they didn't launch a surprise and brutal attack that severely pissed off every single person in the nation, and Japan did.

Really? You don't use "We drove the British out." "We expanded across the continent?" "We defeated Hitler." "We killed Bin Laden." and so on and so on? Maybe you don't, but plenty of Americans do. You take pride in those actions, and deservedly so. I don't take any pride in the atrocities that Japan committed against Korea - they were wrong, and we did do terrible things like the comfort woman and so on.

Actually, they did. Not as many, obviously, but they did.

I guess you're trying to imply that Red Redemption is too young to understand these things, but he's absolutely right. I think there's zero chance of the USA dropping nukes on anyone, unless they attacked the homeland first or dropped nukes on one of our territories. In either case, I think it would be very unlikely they did it without the full support of the UN. This isn't a video game.

Not very impressed with China's policing of its own; try harder, China.
