squats and deadlifts are no more dangerous than any other exercise when done properly. if you don't learn correct form in something as simple as a bicep curl you'll hurt yourself too.

Dam man that sucks. Screwed my lower back doing squatts soph year in highschool. Haven't done a weighted squatt since not even through Jr college ball. My feet tingle and feels numb sometimes. Ironically going back to gym has helped. Certain things I stay away from and I'm good.

When I was young and my intellect was in its infancy I did squats on the Smith machine because I didn't have a spotter at the time. Messed up my back to the point that I couldn't walk for 3 days and it still goes out today.

Still have skinny ass legs too.

You have my sympathy. Pray yours is only a muscle strain. I ended up with a pinched nerve for 18 months.

Have you ever been taught how to deadlift & squats? A lot of trainers don't even know proper form on them.

Def not lifts to just watch from somebody or learn on a youtube video

I don't think I have the symptoms for a pinched nerve. I don't have the pain shooting down my leg or anything like that. The pain is pretty isolated.

You didn't know that before?

The main problem is people use the lower back as the main joint in hip movement, and obviously, it's HIP movement, not back movement. They squat down by flexing their abs (crunching) and shoot back up by extending (arching) their back. They should be flexing and extending the hips to do the movement.

Y'all need to do some hip activation/mobilization.

I've watched a lot of deadlifts and powercleans videos and also learned it in weightlifting class in college many years ago. I've incorporated them into my workout, but I'm supposed to do progressively heavier weights and I just get wary of injury. This thread confirms my fears.

I'm glad my injury isn't as serious as a herniated disc or something like that, but still. I am never doing squats or dead lifts again.

Squats are one of my favorite lifts, proper form on it is much easier than on deadlifts. Also never use Smith machines, they are the devil.

I did P90X 5 months after my disc problem originally occurred, and I had no pain for like 4-5 months straight. Currently it's just an ache once in a while. I think P90X with modification can help your back ALOT.

I love doing deadlifts but I've stopped doing them for the time being. I think they are the cause of a recurring ache/weakness throughout the entire right side of my body that comes and goes occasionally (probably some kind of disc problem that gets aggravated by it).

I was taught the proper form but still, just one slip-up or over-doing it on weight can do it.

Proper form and not overdoing myself is a huge reason why I do all my weights-based workouts with a professional trainer.

That shooting pain from sciatic nerve hurts like a mother man. I get it maybe 3 times a year if I'm not careful. The only way to make sure your OK is an MRI.

"Strong lifts" is a good place to go for proper deadlift and squat techniques. Squats are just about the best exercise one can do, when done properly. Start with no weight and slowly add weight.
