I was squatting the other day and I ended up straining or spraining my lower back. Worst back pain I have ever experienced. Warning to everyone, never overdo yourself on squats or deadlifts! I learned the hard way.

I've been doing dead lifts for the last 3 years apparently with poor form, and I've ended up with a herniated disc. Now I can't do squats/deadlifts, play contact sports according to my doctor

**** like this is the reason why I never did dead lifts and squats before this year.

Now I might have to stop even though I just started doing them....

Squats, deadlifts, and even bench press to a lesser extent should absolutely NOT be performed without the supervision/instruction of an expert to ensure proper form. Hell, you even need continuous supervision because as you go up in weight the form tends to tank big time.

At the very least have someone tape you while you're doing it and then assess your form based on the many guidelines available on some reputable exercise websites and make sure you aren't doing something incorrectly. For squats, that's mainly keeping your chest up and out, your core tightened, and following a "sitting down" movement with your a$$ sticking out and your back NOT rounded (should have a concave arch in the lower back). Knees, hip flexors, herniated disks, and many many other things could get majorly screwed up with poor form. And don't even get me started on deadlifts. That's probably the most dangerous of them all because the course of the movement isn't intuitive. Hell even bench press can screw you up big time (specifically: shoulder and rotator cough) if you don't follow good form. I know this sounds like a bunch of paranoid alarmist crap but it really isn't. Take care of your bodies everyone.

    Hope you feel better OP.

Also those that are deadlifting, please start each rep from the floor. Otherwise you're putting a lot more stress on your back by "hanging" the weight.

I started doing sum odeadlifts to lower the stress placed on my lower back.

I've never done squats or deadlifts. Just too dangerous. Your comments on bench press are also correct.

I just smh watching some people at the gym either trying to lift too heavy a weight or using bad form. Weightlifting is a very enjoyable activity if done correctly and with respect for one's body.

You sort of contradict yourself. You say you don't do squats or deadlifts because they are dangerous, but then you say that weightlifting is fine if done correctly. Well that applies to squats and deadlifts as well. People just don't take proper form and technique seriously

It does take a lot of practice and conscience effort to perform deadlifts and squats correctly. You really have to focus on your form and not necessarily the weight you are lifting.

Perfect form is what I tell people when asking tips for the gym. It dont matter how much weight your lifting if its poorly structure and not the correct form. CONCENTRATE ON FORM PEOPLE!
