He’s now 5-2, 1.13 after seven starts, with a 71-9 K-BB ratio and .170 opponent average in 56 innings. Gray also survived despite being in less than peak form on Friday, when he surrendered a season-high seven hits at Texas. He still managed to get 20 outs while giving up just one unearned run, topping out at 98 mph with his fastball and relying heavily on his slider. Through eight starts, he’s 6-1, 1.19 with a 71-11 K-BB ratio and a .167 opponent average in 60 innings."
If we were to take Appel, is he the kind of prospect that would make it to the majors pretty quick like Price or Strasburg
anyone else think we're going to nab gray instead of appeal simply because boras represents appeal and we wont have that much more money for players in later rounds?
He's not on those two's level but yes it would be the expectation that he would be a fast mover. Something reasonable would be sending him to LoA or HiA after signing and then starting him in AA the next season. If everything pans out at AA then he could be a September call-up later (one year after being drafted) and be in the ML starting rotation at the beginning of his second full pro season. That's an extremely accelerated timeline but that's what you'd expect from a college pitcher going #1 overall. Unfortunately Appel is closer to Gerrit Cole in talent than Price/Strasburg. Cole is on a slightly slower track; he's in AAA at the beginning of his 2nd full pro season. Depends. I don't think Appel is any more likely to play hardball this year. He's probably less inclined. The Cubs will probably sign #2 pitcher for the same amount or more than the #1 if the Astros are deadset on <$5m so it doesn't matter who goes #1 and who goes #2. Buxton got a lot more than Correa last year. I see Appel signing in the $5-6m range.

Maybe, but I think (and hope) that won't be a factor in the pick. We need the pick to turn into a star even if it takes a couple of years
I agree with this, but I also think the Astros need very good value from the round 2 pick. I think Appel is at least up there in ceiling with every top prospect, but is a college senior giving the Astros some leverage (especially if they are projected for last place at time of draft). I want the Astros to work with Gray and Appel and see who gives them the best deal. I can see the Astros trying to let guys around the 15 overall pick know that they will have 12th pick money available at 40.
Mark Appel vs. Washington: 8 IP, 7 H, 4 R (3 ER), 2 BB, 7 K, and he got the win, as Stanford topped Washington 7-5. Jonathan Gray went 8 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 10 against Baylor. He did not factor into the decision as OU walked off with a 2-1 loss in Waco.
Sean Manaea got the win against Creighton, as he went 6 2/3, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits (solo homer), walking 4, and striking out 8.
Jonathan Gray threw 6 shutout innings against New Orleans, allowing 2 hits and striking out 10. And I just did a Twitter search on him a moment ago and there's a bunch of tweets saying that he hit 103.
After that 8th inning double play, the Astros D has produced a ML leading 21 double plays. Having those ground ball pitchers pays off when we can turn two.

Sean Manaea pitched the first game of a doubleheader for Indiana State today as they took on Illinois State. He was rolling along... until the Redbirds touched him up for 4 in the bottom of the 6th, as he gave up a 3-run homer to Eric Aguilera and an inherited run scored after he left. Manaea ended up taking the loss as the Sycamores fell 4-2. Final line: 5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R (3 ER, 1 inherited), 3 BB, 9 K
