OK I'm purchasing a gun for home defense. I'm currently trying to evaluate what to purchase. Choices include a shotgun (e.g., Remington 870), a handgun (e.g., bigger cartridge stuff like a .40 S&W or a .357 magnum), or a rifle carbine. My current lean is towards a rifle carbine (e.g., AR 15 Bushmaster) due to its ability to fire multiple rounds easily, handling, power and minimal recoil I love the price of shotguns and their stopping power (unmatched) but they take longer to reload and aren't particularly maneuverable. Handguns I feel are more difficult to aim well and have reduced stopping power. Any suggestions from gun owners here? Also, availability of ammo and the gun itself certainly will play a role if you have thoughts on that, too. Please don't turn this into a debate on guns -- there's another forum where that's already being discussed...
Don't think the automatic rifle is enough for home defense, I'd suggest a minigun or rocket launcher. Hey, you wanna feel secure.
yeah I was thinking about something for myself. I can buy my wife something separate. Probably better for her to have a handgun, yes. And she's a decent shot, so aiming it won't be too hard...
She can learn to use it. They aren't that big and heavy. However as far as home defense.. for me.. I love me some shotguns (with no influence from Uncle Joe). with .223/5.56, unless you use frangible loads the bullet will pass through walls easier then with a shotgun (not talking slugs). There's nothing a criminal will notice more then the action of an 870. However, I think in his wifes case, I agree, a pistol would probably be the best option. (unless he takes her out to get familiar with shotgun loads) As far as shotguns being maneuverable, you could go with a tactical style with grips and retractable stock.. or another option, which is what I'm doing, is getting a $5 tax stamp for a AOW type weapon. The Serbu Super Shorty. It's basically a pistol shotgun based on the Mossberg 500 or the Rem. 870. It's considered a smooth bore pistol so it's legal if you get the stamp. It's small, 12gauge, and has a foldable foregrip (that you use to pump the action) regardless if you get something else for home defense.. I'd get the AR though if you don't have one already.
Always put things in perspective -- if you had a baseball bat under your bed and smacked a burglar in the head he would be hurting bad. Now if you shoot him in the face with a 22 he's going to be hurting a lot worse. Sometimes stopping power/ etc. is overrated.
biggie seems more the type who needs to shoot an intruder from afar......he doesn't seem to have the caJones to be a batman
Unless you are home during a home invasion where there could be up to 5-6 criminals working together.. 22LR ain't going to cut it. You better hope you're a better shot then them cause if you missed (or not) it's almost a sure thing they're coming back with more fire power then a 22. This is not counting drugged up criminals or ones with military experience. God help you if that happens.
You're creating an exaggerated worse case scenario... drugged up criminals with military experience -- better have a grenade launcher on that Mossberg.
yeah that's why I like the AR, since you don't have to spend time reloading like you would with a shotgun....although that serbu super shorty looked workable
no it isn't. I was always told to prepare for worst case scenario. You never know what's going to happen. you know.. like the Dorner situation that happened recently? A wacko with military experience on the rampage. you just can't predict the future (unless your Nostradamus) and there are such things as ex-military.. gone bad. Don't twist my words. When I say drugged up.. as in.. not making sane decisions, not taken down with multiple hits of a 22, things you cant predict. Not necessarity drugged up cons with military exp.. although that is possible too.
I have a Remington 870 express as should you. Easy to use, 6+1 capacity, you will always have ammo available and it will last forever. They are also easy to maintain and every gunsmith in america will know it like the back of their hand for any future maintenance if needed. I would recommend in this humid environment the 870 Marine Magnum version for its resistance to corrosion and durability: MODEL 870™ SPECIAL PURPOSE MARINE MAGNUM Basspro shops link You can add a Magpul stock , forend and rail if you like, they are available on amazon and you can install them yourself.
Purchase a handgun. It's very mobile, you'll have more rounds than the shotgun, and none of the safety concerns of an AR 15. Consider there's a possibility you will be slicing through you family's walls with that gun while trying to catch an intruder. Also, consider most robbers will be unarmed. Simply having a gun will get them to freeze when you tell them. It's highly unlikely you'll be involved in some movie style gun battle.
