Maybe. Maybe not. Warren just beat the extremely well funded charismatic Scott whatever his name was. Ordinary folks can at times see through the image to view actual integrity, especially if it is focused on their interests. It is true that big corporations and Wall Street would go nuts to support Hillary or any Republican against Warren.
Scott Brown pulled a stunning upset to win that special election. Being beaten out 2 years later by a democrat in a liberal state isn't that surprising.
We don't have to balance the budget, we have to reduce the deficit in order to boost our credit rating which does affect us and the entire world. Look, I think the whole thing is going to collapse, when you have that much wealth in the hands of the few, and the many get more and more disfranchised, eventually you will have revolution. If the system doesn't put money back into the middle class and keep it thriving, then the people will just take it. People here are so arrogant to think that America will somehow buck the trend of every great state in human history that has always collapsed. It doesn't last forever. And when you have morons in office just worried about serving the few, it's a recipe for disaster. But for the short term, to ensure that we can push that collapse off a little further,we need to boost taxes. And to boost taxes, we'll need to cut spending to get the compromise.
Very true. I was living in Massachusetts at the time. Martha Coakley was one of the most incompetent candidates I have ever seen. She acted as if the election was won the day she won the Dem primary. Brown wouldn't have beaten a halfway decent candidate, most likely.
Bernie to the rescue? http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/article/20130405/NEWS03/304050014/-1/RSS19?nclick_check=1
Anyone see Bernie on Bill Maher last night? He was on fire. Man I hope I have that kind of passion at that age.
I wonder if at this point it is safe to call Chomsky a Prophet. Anyhow, it seems when a D is in office they are masters of compromise, and when an R is in office they are highly succesful at pulling the nation to the right. What does this do? Exactly what I've always said: the foundation of American politics have been moving right for decades, and the effect of that is Obama supporters think they are on the left or just left of center. In reality, D & R's are to the right of centre, and people are just re-labelling themselves to fit in. These two parties lost the map to the center a long a time ago, now they are only insignificantly left and right of each other.
Could it be that Obama is cutting Social Security because he is a liar and not because he's trying to "appease" the 1%? Perhaps Morey was right, Mitt should have been our guy?
Responding to some of the claims made by those defending the chained cpi cuts to social security for the elderrly ********** Switching from the current index to the chained CPI would immediately begin to cut benefits and would continue to do so year after year. For an average worker retiring at the age of 65, this would amount to a cut of $650 a year by age 75. At age 85, this would be a cut of $1,130 a year. “Using the chained CPI to calculate benefits would have a much larger impact on the income of most retirees than President Obama’s tax increases last year did on the wealthy. For a couple earning $500,000 a year, their taxes went up by $2,300 a year. That is less than 0.5 percent of their pre-tax income and a 0.6 reduction of their after tax income. Since Social Security is about 70 percent of the income of the typical retiree, switching from the current index to the chained CPI would be a reduction in income of more than 2 percent, more three times that of the tax increase to the wealthy. http://feeds.feedburner.com/cepr ... “Furthermore, the claim that the chained CPI provides a more accurate measure of the rate of inflation experienced by the elderly is simply not true. Seniors devote a much larger share of their income to items that have risen faster than the overall CPI, specifically health care and housing. No one has comprehensively studied the patterns of substitution by the elderly, so anyone claiming that the switch to the chained CPI is being done in the interest of accuracy is simply not being truthful. “Unless the Bureau of Labor Statistics constructs a full elderly CPI we won’t have an accurate measure of the rate of inflation seen by the elderly. All we can know for certain is that the switch to the chained CPI is a way to cut benefits for a group of people that for the most part are already struggling.”
There's no question Mitt would be doing a better job now All we do under Obama is lurch from crisis to crisis because Obama can't work with Congress effectively, likely because he's too lazy to roll up his sleeves and actually put in the hard work.
Texxx is a lost cause The President has offered to CUT SOCIAL SECURITY! and you still dog him and say he is unwilling to work with republicans. unreal
Senate is a very different race than the Presidency. You don't really "lead" anything in the Senate, and so charisma isn't as necessary. That's why you have a lot of non-charismatic people all over the senate (Reid and McConnell immediately come to mind). Even there, she barely beat Brown in a staunchly blue state. But when is the last Presidential election that was won by someone not very charismatic? Nixon? That was before my time, so I'm not sure how charismatic his competition was.
While I might not applaud the move, I don't understand the surprise. He NEVER campaigned as some sort of liberal. He's never really spoken like much of a liberal. The only voices painting him to be a liberal are the Limbaughs of the world and (on the other end of the spectrum) the hopeful liberals. He is uber-pragmatic and sees this as a reasonable step. And honestly, the more I think about it, the more I agree with him. Social Security was NEVER intended to be 70% of someone's retirement income. That's insane. The baby boom generation has not been able to save and that's a catastrophe, but it's a catastrophe that won't be solved with a +- 3% of a small monthly check.
To be fair the GOP poured a ton of resources in against Warren and she won anyway. I don't think she's uncharismatic at all, but even if true, no reason she can't make the same transition Hillary did image wise. Hell, I'd like to see a Hillary/Warren ticket.
I think we should just cut taxes on the rich to 10%, and eliminate the capital gains tax. I'm serious. Why not give into the rich and free markets and let them do as they will. If the car is going to be going over the cliff, might as well push the gas to the medal and make it happen sooner. The sooner the better, the sooner we can pick-up the pieces and rebuild after all the rich right-wing republicans have been guillotined in popular revolt.
