I don't know about star, but if JJ Reddick can find a home in the NBA so can Fredette. The problem is these guys (same with their evaluation of T-Rob)going into a place like Sac-town and the fan base expects them to save the franchise as #5 picks. They can be good complementary players in the right situation.
Chuck was a fan favourite, he plays defesne, especially post defense at an elite level. It was a difficult decision to let him go, but he will always remain a true Rockets in my heart.
JJ is a very underrated defender though. At least according to SVG, and he knows a thing or two. I don't think Jimmers defence is underrated.
Great post, as PER usual. ;-)- I'm sure everyone else noticed, including those with a confused opinion of the Chuckster's value, that when he was finally put in for a good burn, the Rockets lead was cut to 5 and stayed right around there. When they foolishly took him out, we quickly ran that lead up to 10, and won by that margin. Yeah, that 6'6" beast is just awful!
Jimmer is somewhere between a good to an excellent shooter, but to compare him to one of the all-time greats like Kerr? No way you can dismiss Kerr based on just open looks playing with good teammates. Kerr shot 47.1% from 3-point land in his rookie year and broke 50% on 3-pointers in his second season. He also played on a number of teams, including a couple of crappy Cleveland teams and still kept up his three point percentage. I get what you are trying to say in terms of the type of player, but you are writing off Kerr way too quickly.
To think Chuck Hayes sucks you either have to never have seen him play or not know a thing about basketball. Either way you should keep your worthless opinions to yourself.
I miss Chuck Hayes. I miss watching bigger players repeatedly trying to post him up and getting frustrated. It was awesome. Always in the right place. Always. I hope he retires a Rocket.
True, that's why SVG put JJ to defend Kobe throughout the 2009 NBA Finals. Jimmer is different story. His skillset is more adapted to the college game, he has almost no elevation in his shots, and plays almost no defense besides drawing charges. But he doesn't get the chance to improve, Keith Smart won't give him minutes, and won't send him down to the D-League to work on his game .... he's wasting his time on the bench.
I remember a couple of season ago when Boston was in town and KG tried to pull his tough guy routine on the Chuckwagon. Didn't work out for him.
I'm not a huge Chuck fan like most here... but I do remember when he was defending Duncan and KG down on the block. Super elite. He's come a super long way. Remember his rookie year when he'd get 4 fouls within like 5 minutes? cray. Still would take Asik and his awesome layups though over Chuck, despite the latter having elite cutting and layup abilities himself.
Chuck couldn't protect the rim like Asik can but I think he's the superior one on one defender. I'd like to see what the D would look like with Chuck next to Omer, I can't even imagine how beautiful it would look. They both set decent screens and not much else on offense though.
Chuck Hayes Rockets - Disney movie --> the undersized D-leaguer becomes a starter and takes on players 2X his size at a posion of need for the TEAM and even wins the battle sometimes all while being paid on a mini contract. Kings - The big free agent last year - over paid little dude that only does a few things well (role player) and has a funny freethrow.
I love to root for Hayes, but unfortunately we don't really need him. He can neither spread the floor nor can he finish inside. His TS% is TRob-esque. He makes Asik look like Shaq as a finisher.
