    I dunno . . .. a proven violater being left intact
while an innocent goes through life maimed. . .that seems right

You end up in a world where People incapable of following the rules
are the only people that are not maimed?
What's to stop them from taking the poor victim's other eye?
So now the only people with sights are the criminal elements
    That is your 'better world'???

If you follow the poorly constructed cliche to its logical end

This is pretty harsh, but I do wish that serious crime was punished more quickly and decisively.

If you're going to be a country that uses prisons and the death penalty then don't eff around with it. For the worst of them, if it's open and shut, put a bullet in the guilty. Quick, clean, and decisive. Make prisons horrible and uncomfortable to the point that one would have to be a fool to ever risk going there.

Stop bogging down the system arresting people for petty drug crimes - And truly punish murderers, rapist, predators, thieves, pedafiles, etc...

Those criminals who comit atrocities and escape the court room with thier lives shouldn't be asking themselves: "How can live on knowing I'll never get out of here?" They should worry about how they're going to make it through the next day. IMO, prison should be so bad that any reasonable person who weighs the risk will quickly come to thier senses.

That's pretty messed up. I'm glad the Constitution would prevent us from considering such a punishment here (especially considering some responses in this thread). If incarceration isn't punishment enough, I think execution is more humane than this. And, if you were to do such a punishment, having it contingent on whether you can pay restitution is plain ridiculous. I half want to find the guy's internet fund and give him a couple bucks to save his skin, but I really don't want to be complicit in such an unjust system of justice in the first place.

That's a pretty messed up understanding of the Bible, at least so far as the Christian lens goes. I know Islam has a different take on what happened. On the latter, Jesus tells the apostles to buy a sword and they say no they have two and then go to the Mount of Olives where Judas betrays him. Peter hits someone with a sword and Jesus tells them all to stop and then heals the man who is helping to arrest him. So, what element of Sharia is being applied here?

But in talking about eye-for-an-eye justice in the Bible, I don't know why you'd look further than the Beatitudes. From Matthew 5:

Old Testament or not, this does not sound like a ringing endorsement of Sharia. Maybe Jews and Muslims can find common ground here, but not Christians.

So is some doctor supposed to perform surgery? What if there are complications, like he has constant pain?

If that type punishment is even on the table, why do think they would care about complications?

Because it's supposed to be equal punishment.

An eye for an eye. Not an eye for an eye plus chronic pain.

Is this the thread where religious people argue with one another over who is the most wrong?

Well the good news is they just loosened restrictions on allowing women to ride bikes, so it's not all bad in the kingdom.

We are protected from Unusual punishment in the bill of rights. Death is not considered unusual. I agree with your point.

What about tying a person up and playing rock music on decibel levels which drive humans insane, is that unusual?
