    BEFORE the interview?

Here's my situation. Wife currently has a 8a-5p job. I currently watch our 2 year old son. I'm trying to find any type of work I can between the hours of 5p-8a. I'm applying at small part time retail jobs. Last week I got a few phone calls for interviews and the times of the interviews was during the time my wife worked. So I had to arrange a babysitter, take my 2 year old to her, go from her house to the job, then back to her house to get my son.... after finding out the hours of the job were only daytime.

So is it wrong on my part to ask questions if the job is full/part time and ask what the hours are BEFORE my interview? It would save me AND the interviewer time (and myself $)

Perfectly acceptable to ask that before an interview.

I would ask too. otherwise, you're wasting your time and theirs. not to mention the money for the babysitter and gas.

edit: i see you already mentioned the above. that's what i get for not reading the last paragraph.

It's expected. You want to be up front as to what it is you're looking for. Keeps you from wasting your time and does the the same for the person doing the hiring.

    Good luck.

completely agreed with all the posters.

I'm a single father with split custody. Before taking my current job - I was in discussions with several companies. I was point blank and up front regarding how challenged my schedule will be during the weeks that I have the kids. Especially during little league season.

Not a one batted an eye.

During the day while the kid goes hungry and tears up the house.

Nothing wrong with asking about the working hours, if you know you can only work during certain hours.

Ask for that tactfully (like kevC said) before you even apply. Once you get to the interview, it's time wasted for both you and the company hiring. Good luck finding a job, man.

It will be difficult and it might sound harsh, but the way it seems, you'll be working mostly to pay for the babysitting if you find work during the daytime or you won't get to spend time with the baby if you work nights when your wife gets home. :(

Why even ask tactfully? This seems like a basic question to ask if the posting does not specify. It's not like asking how much the position pays or vacation hours before the interview.

Really the only downside is that when scheduling the interview, you may be talking to someone who has no knowledge of the working hours for that position.

You should be a Night Auditor at a Hotel. The Hours are usually 11pm-7am or 10pm-6am. It might work for you. Let me know if you need help finding one of those types of jobs. I work in the Hotel industry at the Corporate level.

Absolutely not- the employer can hire anyone they choose, and YOU can take employment with any company you choose. So, you have every right to ask this.

Let the employer offer the job first, then you can negotiate

You might as well not go to the interview if this is your strategy.

Be upfront--if anything at least they know you have priorities that needs to be taken into consideration when they choose a candidate for the job.

Do this. I've used this strategy successfully with marriage. And I don't mean to brag but I'll be interviewing for my 5th marriage pretty soon.
