I am a punk doctor, and I would much rather recover from an injury like this rather than a blown out knee. It looks much worse initially, as stated earlier, but once you take care of the skin opening and the risk of possible infection, you're just dealing with a broken bone, which isn't as difficult (usually) to recover from than multiple ligament injuries - especially considering it's a "clean" break. The raised floor thing is interesting, and could gain some traction seeing as to how he was near the edge of the court. If he's looking towards the floor seats, I could easily see how his perception was off, and he was thinking that he had another two feet or so before he landed.
This happened to an A&M guard 2 to 3 years ago. Found the video and not going to watch it. And I saw the live tv thing happen today and didn't want to watch any replays of that either, so apologies if it's not equally gruesome, but this event popped in my mind. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ds0CrlLyCNw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Am too squeamish to watch, but can anyone explain what he was trying to do over there near the edge? Trying to defend a shot or going for a loose ball? Poor kid! I think Pitino's reaction was sincere, and I don't automatically think he's that sincere. Was very glad to hear about the surgery. Someone asked about the cost -- I'm pretty sure the universities cover medical expenses related to injuries that happen in practice or in games.
I agree, anytime you blow out a weight bearing articulation it seems like there is a lot more to worry about than just putting a rod in a bone and letting it heal back together. A bone will essentially grow back and restabilize close to its original strength...but there's a good chance a joint may heal poorly, scar too much, etc, and never be the same again.
You know I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't want to watch the injury happen, some things are better left unseen, but to each his own. I hope he recovers quickly from his injury and doesn't have too much psychological scarring! .......... .......... ..........
I just seen the up close picture. I didn't know he's bone was sticking out. You're right, this beats Magahee's injury.
He turned to watch the shot. Although landing is routine and probably drilled into his muscle memory, turning like that throws a wrench into his landing mechanics. I think we've all had that moment where we don't watch our step because we're concentrating our sight elsewhere and almost sprain our ankle on a flat surface. Basically, he set himself up for a soft blind landing and put his ankle in a position where it couldn't bend/react correctly, so the leg had to give out elsewhere. Normally, that's just a bad ankle sprain/dislocation, but i guess the positioning of it all forced the break farther up the ankle.
I just saw that pic, we were watching on our 2nd TV while we were watching a show. Jesus that's even worse than I expected or could see on TV.
Palabra...I saw it on you tube this morning and the reaction from the Louisville bench says it all, hope he has a speedy recovery...
Off topic, I guess, but something curious I noticed while watching the Club America vs. Chivas football game last night. One of the Chivas players went up for the ball and landed awkwardly and appeared to have shattered his knee as it was severely dislocated. The announcers even grimaced at how horrible it looked when the replay was shown. But the delay lasted all of two minutes, he was immediately carted off. No 30 minute delay, no players huddled around him like he just suffered a heart attack. The game must go on and he will be fine. If this was American football, or any American sport for that matter, they would most likely have stopped the clock to give everyone time to cry.
I've seen this thread but haven't clicked on it since I have no idea who Kevin Ware is but I finally caved in and clicked it. Wow. That is the nastiest thing I have seen in sports. Hopefully he recovers fast and plays ball again.
