The Bulls were not floundering with Doug Collins they lost in the East Finals the last year. I have never heard of a team floundering and making it to the conference finals. The Pistons were just better at that time.
Seriously? Are we gonna be playing this game again? MJ played for at least 6 years before PJ got hired to the Bulls, if PJ was so insignificant why didn't he win a ring before PJ became coach? Kobe and Shaq already played together before PJ became coach, if PJ doesn't do anything why is it they only won rings after he became coach? Coaches have a lot impact on a team, they develop players and they're the ones who allocate playing time during a game. There's a reason why the LA's first "super team" with Kobe, Shaq, Malone and Payton made it to the finals while the second "superteam" with DH, Kobe, Nash and Gasol is having a hard time just making the playoffs.
This is the whole point. Phil Jackson is the best in history at getting people to voluntarily buy into the things it takes to win a championship. Every other coaching skill is a dime a dozen. A legendary MJ was not going to win 6 titles without Phil Jackson. Maybe 1 or 2. Maybe none. Maybe 3 or 4. But not 6.
You think he wins less with Pop or Red? IMO, the four best coaches in history are Pop, Red, Phil and Pat Riley. You can't go wrong with any of them. I personally like Pop the best because I'm impressed by how flexible his system is and how he has completely changed his team based on the personnel.
