Don Young says he "meant no disrespect" when he used a racial slur during a radio interview this week to describe migrant workers on his father's old ranch. In a radio interview this week, Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, referred to migrant workers who used to work for his father as "wetbacks." Young was discussing the importance of American industry on Alaskan radio station KRBD Ketchikan FM when he brought up the issue of automation. He lamented that it was hindering the number of available jobs in the United States. “My father had a ranch; we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes,” Young told KRBD. “It takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It’s all done by machine.” On Thursday, Young released a statement to clarify his remarks. "During a sit-down interview with Ketchikan public radio this week, I used a term that was commonly used during my days growing up on a farm in central California. I know that this term is not used in the same way nowadays, and I meant no disrespect," Young said in a statement to Buzzfeed. In the statement, Young also noted how migrant workers play a vital role in America's workforce. Yeah, completely out of line for a state legislator to speak that way to a taxpaying citizen; and would be exceptionally worse if Maxwell was a constituent in his district. It's also a non-racial piece of legislation, so Mitchell has no business bringing that into the conversation; furthermore alleging slavery in an explicitly first and second person context is slanderous and anachronistic. Additionally, no minority legislator is elected without the support of white voters, so all of the ones in his district should either lobby to have him censured or removed, let alone not voting for him in the next election cycle. Southern inbreeding is a complete and total fabrication, and all the other personal behavior traits could be just "rationally" projected back towards blacks. And yes, the claim that blacks can't be racist: though it's nowhere in Mitchell's comment, is completely false and was originally irresponsibly propagated by black intellectuals based on a convoluted definition of the term.
