So did anyone go to the Flaming Lips Auditorium Shores show? I'm really curious what people thought.

They played the new album in full. Then after that they started to play Yoshimi in full but had to cut it short due to time restraints. But the new album. Oh man. I've already heard it through a leak and like it a lot, but man. That performance blew me away. The visuals were crazy too. A few of the songs might be a bit too long, but still, overall, it kind of blew me away, and I think it might be my favorite performance from them (my 4th time to see them)

BUT, I could tell about half the audience was wondering what in the world was going on and not enjoying it at all. Which, I guess if you came in expecting a regular Flips show you would have been disappointed, they didn't do most of their usual antics. But I came in wanting to new hear the new songs (the live show from before is fun, but its kind of tired by now), and when he said they were doing the whole new album, that made me very happy, and I wasn't disappointed.

Oh, and Jim James opening set was so so good. I like MMJ a whole lot, but even I didn't expect that set to be as good as it was.

It sounds like Prince's show was epic - six encores and a reunited A Tribe Called Quest as his opener. He went to nearly 3 a.m.!

Oh, to be a platinum badge-holder and/or friend of the promoter...

I got to see The Smashing Pumpkins and The Sword. The show was great! I got there around 7:00 and they were telling people they were at capacity. Well, I was inside by 7:30.

People packed the street outside and inside there was plenty of room to get around. It was cash bar for the first band and there was no ATM, but then they opened the bar. I never want to drink Red Bull again!

That is inaccurate. The people who think Austin is the epitome of awesome are what suck. Austin itself is just fine.

Wow, it's official. SXSW was once again a rousing bore.

lol @ that^^^^^ making it "official."

It does seem strange that he couldn't find any music playing, unless he was there before the music portion even started...

Yeah the dude basically went to have a bad time and didn't go to any events besides one convention center showing. No wonder he didn't enjoy it while out interviewing drunk people on 6th.

The dude probably wanted to do Coachella or Ultra but had to settle for SXSW due to budgetary constraints. So it's obviously going to impact the psyche when toned olive skin bodies and hot chicks are replaced with hairy hippies and fat girls and drunk ppl stammering with nothing interesting to say. He gave it a chance, but it just didn't deliver from a crowd standpoint.

I'd either kill that guy or myself if I had to spend more than 5 minutes with him

    Could not watch

Even so, I think the point droopy was making (and I agree with) is that you'd really have to try to have a bad time at SXSW. It might not be OMG BEST EVERRRR, but it's a week of eating, drinking, and listening to music, most of which is free.

Also, if he wanted to avoid drunk hippies, not sure Coachella is the place to do that

There's really no point in engaging him. His schtick is to get you to react. You're letting the terrorists win.

haha yeah you're probably right. Still, the SXSW hate was so weak, even by his standards.

When you talk about music festivals, a lot of it is spectacle. It's not just another drunk weekend stumbling around a big empty field with Dave Mathews and his band. So when the spectacle isn't there, there's definitely something really fake about it. Oh dude, it's so mellow, it's so chill out, showering is for the system, let's experiment with guys and so on. The subtlety, the intensity and the depth is lost in comparison to other festivals that could be attended. And that's why it attracts the lethargic, dazed and confused crowd you see in the youtube video.

    Don't shoot the messenger.
