***** limiting his minutes. He won't have a career getting 20 min a game. Why don't you just stroke us all off like Mch.

This is definitely a serious concern mostly on Parsons' and Harden's minutes.
Are the coaches playing them for too many minutes increasing the chance for future injuries? :(

Current Top 5 Minutes for the Rockets:
    1 James Harden 2655
    2 Chandler Parsons 2547
    3 Jeremy Lin 2274
    4 Omer Asik 2132
    5 Carlos Delfino 1523

And this is an excellent TrueHoop article showing how "Heavy Minutes Hurt Title Chances"

In summary, Abbot made an interesting finding that none of the All-Stars (LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett, Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Pau Gasol, Blake Griffin, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Chris Bosh) playing >3000 heavy minutes during the regular season won the title in the past 7 years.

Interesting tidbits about insecure coaches and 93-94 Rockets:

    "..
    Insecure coaches?

Here's a guess as to why coaches play their best players such long minutes: Because they're scared. Scared of lots of things. Scared of losing, scared of looking dumb and -- in an industry where the average job lasts just a few years -- scared of getting fired. The reality is that almost every coach in the NBA is on the hot seat every year. (A notable exception: Popovich.)

Any coach who doesn't feel the heat is oblivious. It makes sense that so many of them essentially fire all of their guns until they are out of ammunition.

That's essentially what Rudy Tomjanovich did in 1993-94. He played Olajuwon a mighty 41 minutes a game, and somehow the center held up for all but two games. The Rockets won their first title, with the top three players playing an average of 35.6 minutes per 82 games -- one of the highest marks in recent history.

The following season, the team was a bit older and more beat up. But Tomjanovich was, by then, a more secure title-winning coach who had every reason to believe his players could turn it on when he wanted them to. No need to rush back from that injury quite so quickly, big fella! The next season the three top Rockets all sat out chunks of the season and averaged just 31.1 minutes per over the season, and nobody played more than 2,853 minutes. The Rockets won the title that season, too.
    .."

Is this the case where insecure coaches played them for too many minutes to save their jobs but increasing the risk for future injuries in the process? :(

    Trade him for everyone's sake!

Jeremy Lin is reluctant on the offensive end. The Rockets should trade him for everyone's sake.

He's clearly upset at the last minutes of today's game.

The look on his face tells you everything.

When everyone's focusing on Harden's free throw, he kept his head down...

Yeah, it's from Feigen. He's a Rocket's homer. Whether he wants to be or not, he has to be. Not getting into that.

But if you're trying to get me on the title of this article, I can find hundreds more that paint a more subdued picture.

It's all basically the same stuff. http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/e...et-along-with-his-rockets-players-last-season

Yup. I was really thinking about the overall minutes between the 3, and at this rate, Lin will probably get another decent contract after his 3rd year. Parsons maybe at risk because they're giving him superstar minutes, or rather, work horse minutes that could cause serious injuries. Same with Harden, but at least he's getting paid his 80 mil, but even he might be at risk getting a serious injury and a really good contract in his 6th year could be at risk. Lin, on the other hand, there might be other teams that offer him a better contract and some may even see that Lin was underutilized which would they might offer him a decent contract. Kind of like Asik when he was with the Bulls. Or maybe Morey just can't stand Mchale and let Mchale go.

I really feel sorry for Parsons though. They expect him to contribute like a superstar. Apparently, he's more important to the team than Asik or Lin, and yet he's only getting paid 888,000 dollars this year and 916,000 dollars the next, and that's not even guaranteed! Imagine if he tore something this year or next year? No more contracts!

    Again, the headline, brah.

And what does any of that have to do with stunting Lowry's growth? It was about McHale's inability to develop the type of relationship he wanted with the players due to the lockout. Let's say that their relationship was indeed less than ideal. What does that have to do with stunting Lowry's growth?

Plus, there was no lockout this year.

No wonder why the offense is so inconsistent you have your supposed starting pg playing nearly 400 min less then your starting sg. And people wonder why Lin and Harden's chemistry isn't stronger and has't gelled. At this point in the season the minutes may be a 200 min discrepancy. But nearly 400 minutes. No wonder why there is no flow in crunch time. And just iso.
This can't be good going foward into the playoffs.
I need our cluthfan stat geeks to do the standard deviation for all the playoff teams starting pgs sgs and sfs and see what their minutes played together and do a comparison minus injury time.

Say you have a young, promising PG who plays exceptionally well for a player of his experience. Suddenly, he gets hurt. Meanwhile, his backup comes in and plays extremely well. Now your promising PG is coming off the bench, minutes slashed, and wondering why his role on the team diminished. All because he gets hurt for a couple weeks?

How do you let a young player grow if you don't him the faintest sense of job security? (In Lin's case, when he struggles...in Lowry's case, when he gets hurt)

That type of "job security" is more likely to invite complacency than improvement and growth.

Losing your starting job to injury is unfortunate, but it's the norm in sports. See: Brady, Tom.

And when the starter struggles, unless he's a genuine superstar and/or has a god awful backup, of course you take him out.

Plus, JVG recently made a point that playing time =/= player development. He used Blatche as an example of a guy who got loads of playing time but no development. So taking Lin out when he struggles isn't necessarily hurting his development.

And as always with these arguments, I think you're really selling Lin short. I refuse to believe he is so mentally weak. But if he in fact is, then he'll likely never play a big role on a winning team.

Pendergast: ******, is Jeremy just too passive from that standpoint?

It's not about (Jeremy) being too passive. It's about whoever is calling the shots for the team, and that would be Kevin McHale, making it known that Jeremy has got to have the ball in his hands.

this guy makes it pretty clear that mchale is not properly using Lin. aka stunting his growth.
