 Just got an app alert from Ch. 13 that a 5.5 Earthquake hit Mexico City. Hope for no casualties, little damage, etc. :(

In before leroy and dadakota say that's our "snow" strategy for tonight's World Cup qualifier game.

Hope it wasn't too bad. I have a chilango friend who was about 8 years old when the big earthquake hit---in '85, was it? That one was bad news. And Mexico City is built on an old lakebed, which magnifies the effects of earthquakes.

^ That's correct. That sucked. I came home from school and the TV Stations were all OFF because they were all offline in downtown Mexico City that afternoon. Power was restored within hours, but radio was working from nearby stations and I had my parents glued to it.

The 1986 FIFA World Cup was almost cancelled due to that.

That one was 400 times stronger than this one.

5.5 is pretty weak as far as earthquakes go right?

That's odd that he reports that sort of stuff to you. What's his boyfriend's name?

I wouldn't say "weak", but there are several of them that happen throughout the year. I just looked and it seems like 5 quakes over 5.5 have happened in the past 7 days worldwide and about 25 in the last 30 days. Of course, the chance of bad stuff happening goes up in places as densely populated as Mexico City.

In terms of potential damage. Ya. Tis a weakling.

Of course it all depends on a country's infrastructure....3rd world countries have much higher chance of casualties etc...
