Surprised that we don't have a thread about this going already.

What are the arguments against this?

    Typical bigot arguments:

    1. If a man wants to marry a dog...
    2. Something about gays eating poop. "Eat da poo poo"
    3. Gay parents will rape their kids...
    4. Wrath of deity.
    5. Insult to XXXX religion.

I remember coming across an old marriage certificate in the courthouse and it had on there "That ____ (groom) and _____ (bride) are of the same color."

If this doesn't get passed today, the walls of bigotry are at least crumbling.

For almost 25 years I supported my gay neighbors. But I will NOT support anybody telling me that I HAVE to support gays. And if I don't I will be call a bigot?

    Yeah, they lost my support.

You're going to need to elaborate on this.

I don't think there's a "confused" emoticon big enough for this post.

For me personally, I'm all for Civil Unions, equal rights and all that.

Just wish the gay community would not use the term marriage.

what about the straight community supporting the gay community's equal rights to marry?

because, otherwise, that's not equal rights.

    why, if i may ask?

my wonderful lesbian friends have been together for 19 years. if they want to make it official by marrying (they do), why the hell should they be told "no"?

exactly 10 years ago 53% of americans wanted gay marriage to be illegal. in 2013, 58% of americans believe gay people should have the right to marry.

if that's not a sea change, i don't know what is.

You don't have to support it, just like I don't support people getting tattoos or riding loud Harleys or listening to today's popular "music." I can voice my displeasure anytime I want, but I'm not going to picket a tattoo parlor, bomb a Harley dealership, or shoot the finger at someone's who is listening to popular "music."

You don't have to support it, you just have to let people live.

Why? Marriage, among it's many meanings, is an intimate union of two people who love each other. What other word fits? If gays use the word marriage, does it diminish your marriage? Does it make you love your spouse less, make you less committed to them?

To me, it seems one of the biggest sticking points is simply the word "marriage". I think any reasonable person is fine with a gay couple having their relationship recognized by law, but for whatever reason some just balk at having it official called a marriage.

Yeah, I think it has to be "marriage," because gayriage is too close to garage. :(

I have a big problem with people comparing the gay rights movement to the civil rights movement (referring to African-Americans). There is NO comparison - African-Americans were discriminated against for seemingly no reason (traditional, cultural differences). Gays had a choice to be homosexual; no one is born "gay." This has been proven by studies on identical twins. I also have a problem with gays invading every institution they can find. For instance, the Boy Scouts of America was built on traditional values. Why do gays feel the need to destroy every institution they disagree with? Finally, I have a problem with the word "gay." The correct term is homosexual. Homosexuals took a perfectly good word, "gay," which means happy, and turned it into a sexually perverse thing.

Nope, doesn't have any affect on my marriage at all.

Maybe the gay community could use a "combining ceremony" ...... :p

Seriously though, just a tradition that I wouldn't like to see end.

Listening to CSPAN this morning, more than half of the callers against gay marriage claimed it was against god or against the definition of marriage.

Yet these people who are using religion as an aegis against gay marriage are not coming out to legislate against 1.) Divorce, 2.) Adultery, or 3.) Premarital sex. I would respect the opponents more if they just stated they found homosexuality disgusting on their own rather than using the Bible to justify their views.
