They've shipped out my new modem.
Here is my current result so I'll have some record when I change it out in a couple of days.

well I was expecting 105 mb but I guess I can't complain since my modem is a little cheap and i'm in a heavily packed residential complex in downtown. :(

OK I am one of the dopey people paying Comcast $7/month for a cable modem, and it is used for TV, internet and phone. Any suggestions for a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem that will also support the phone too?

So just to clarify, if I get the Performance package my internet speed will be closer to 50 than the advertised 25?

Nope, what you are speaking of is the easy install method. You can simply call them at any time and tell them you have your own modem and they activate it directly through serial number etc. over the phone.

No. Performance will get 25. If you get blast (which used to be 30), you'll get 50. If you have Extreme 50, you'll get 100.

There's also one called performance starter which is even slower than performance and that package will not get doubled or upgraded.

I've had an Arris modem before which is reliable. I'd say either the TM722G or TM822G. Here's the list of approved modems from Comcast.

I started to research this last friday, but got busy over the weekend and didn't finish. From what I can tell, if you have voice then it's questionable if it is worth it.

Several problems that I found people having so far:

    1) I found many people claimed that Comcast won't activate your voice modem unless you buy it from a comcast Kiosk at a best buy. Some people reported buying the exact same model as the best buy sold on Amazon, but were told they couldn't activate it and had to return it.

    2) A few people have said they did manage to get their voice modem connected and working despite not getting it thru best buy and comcast, but they had to go thru a drawn out series of customer support phone calls to finally get ahold of someone who was either willing or didn't know any better to activate it. Your mileage may vary, but it sounded like you may be in for hours of comcast customer service calls which may or may not ever get your modem activated for voice.

    3) The voice modems that I found which were listed as supported by Comcast all ran around ~$160, meaning it will take 2 years before it really counts as a savings over renting for $7 a month. Of course if a new technology comes out or your purchased modem breaks then you are on your own to replace it, where if you rent they will fix or replace it. Maybe there is a cheaper one out there that I missed, but the ones people have listed in this thread for ~$80 are not voice modems.

    4) I have read some comcast customer reports saying that if you buy your own modem and have voice they will come out and set up a splitter and then waive your modem fee, so you can use your modem and their's will just do the phone. But I have read other customers who have claimed that they will come out and set up the splitter and get it working but still charge the fee since you still have their equipment for the voice to work.

I haven't called comcast myself yet to confirm or deny any of these reports. If anybody who has the voice option and has bought their own modem wants to chime in though I would like to know myself.

'No charge', except for that price increase they pushed in January.

Thanks for the info. Was planning on switching over to Comcast from uverse. mainly to watch the rockets but also for better price rate (temporarily). Are the Rockets on all comcast TV tiers/plans?

Any other tips from fellow clutchfans to cut down on cost? Besides buying your own modem.

    Only need TV and internet.

I don't have Comcast anymore but I believe CSN is on all tiers except the absolute lowest. It's on standard cable where you get channes 2-80? (not exact) . It is channel 39. Keep in mind if you choose this plan, you don't get HD.

With my old, reconditioned $15 router and iPad I'm getting 27 down and 21 up. I should be getting 50 both ways for $60 a month. I guess I should be shopping for a router upgrade.
