Upcoming slate to serve as learning curve for Motiejunas

This time, this stretch of games and tests, was coming from the moment the ink dried on the deals to send out Patrick Patterson and Marcus Morris, leaving Donatas Motiejunas as the Rockets' starting power forward.

As the Rockets' strength of schedule takes a sudden upturn, Motiejunas will step up in weight class and face tests like few he has seen before.

Tim Duncan, David West, Zach Randolph and Blake Griffin await. The progress with the Rockets' move to a rarely used rookie will be measured, beginning Sunday against Duncan and the Spurs. Few challenges will be greater.

Motiejunas, however, was as brash and confident as always, certain that the experience will only benefit him.

"The better you know the guys, the easier it will be to play against them," Motiejunas, a veteran of 11 NBA starts, said. "The more I play against them, the better I will know them. The better I will know them, the better I will defend them."

A possible preview

The Rockets are likely to take some of the defensive pressure off Motiejunas by initially assigning Omer Asik to Duncan, but that will only delay the inevitable. Motiejunas will still have his turns against Duncan in his season turning back the clock. The other power forwards likely will remain his responsibility. Either Duncan, Griffin or Randolph also could be a first-round playoff matchup.

Yet when asked if he will be taking notes the next two games, Motiejunas could contain his bravado no longer.

"I know what they don't do; they don't run good," he said. "They're not in the shape they were 20 years ago."

Veteran power forwards do, however, enjoy teaching lessons, from Duncan and West executing pick-and-rolls to Randolph working in the paint and hitting the offensive glass, and Griffin flying above the lane and punishing rims.

"He's going to find out," coach Kevin McHale said. "It's different. That's going to be D-Mo's next evolution … playing against bigger, stronger guys … using your quickness, trying to use your length, trying to get them to take shots you want them to take, not shots they want to take."

Defense has improved

Motiejunas has had much to learn defensively in his first weeks in the rotation and as a starter. Initially, he was trying to do too much, scrambling to defend inside and out, helping often but leaving his position or his assignment. He has improved and generally done well in pick-and-roll coverages but can struggle in one-on-one, low-post matchups. He has had some foul trouble, though much of that has been on the perimeter when trapping on guards going around screens.

Facing such strong power forwards, even if only part-time against Duncan, will at least clarify his most pressing responsibilities.

"It helps me, of course," Motiejunas said. "When you have to be all around the floor, it makes it much harder than to have one man by your sight. You just stay next to him. Don't let him get the ball. That's it. It's much easier, at least for me."

Asked if he can defend more physical players, Motienunas of course said "of course." But more than just handle the job, he said that while the power forwards he will face this week will test him, he will test them, too.

"Usually the physical guys are not the fastest guys on the court," Motiejunas said. "It gives me a little bit of an advantage."

With that, he seemed to look forward to the challenges ahead, having known they were coming long before he became the Rockets' starter.

The Rocket's 3 Bros squared off pretty good against the Spurs' Big 3 last time they played, so as long as the bench shows up today like they did on Friday, I believe the Rockets can take this game.

I honestly think that the Rocket's bench is the x-factor for every game going forward.

Hate playing against the Spurs. They play like a freaking well-oiled machine. Yet, despite their terrific regular season records, they have been bounced out of the playoffs fairly easy and early in recent years. Still, they can be so great in regular season games. If we win this game, everybody must contribute like the last game.

Win or lose, go all out and play Rocketball!
