This game just shows you what p*****s todays players are. There were things in this game that the refs let go that would be fouls today and a lot of plays where todays players would cry all week if they didn't get the call. The flow of the game was so much better, but now the league goes out of its way to protect their chosen few so much that it affects how the game looks to the average fan. In this game although he didn't foul out and when know stars have always been protected Elvin Hayes got 5fouls. Do you think Karl Malone or Lebron would ever get whistled for 5 fouls in a game in recent years. Another thing is the reason Calvin always harps about the mid range game is back when he played a 15ft jumper was considered a NBA layup. If you gave a guy an open look from there it was pretty much automatic he was going to make that shot 75-80% of the time.
The rest of the documentary goes a bit more in-depth but basically a fight between Kevin Kunnert and Kermit Washington broke out and Kareem came to hold back Newlin (which usually you hold your own teammate but I guess things were different back then) and Rudy T, as the captain, rushed toward the broohaha and Washington turned his head and punched him, because he thought Rudy T was going to get him from behind. That was obviously not the case as Rudy T wasn't that type of player, and because of that accident neither's careers were the same again.
Well basically, there was an altercation between two other players, Rudy T was running to help calm down the Rocket player. Washington thought he was coming to join the fight and hit Rudy while he was running toward him.
This section of the video gives a little more info on the punch and what transpired. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/jgqUZ1IAA_8?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Nicely commented, can't add much more lol. On my own comment about the "Not that fierce" D - its meaning to say that there can be the over-romanticized notion that every game then was an all out slugfest. But the game action itself was actually more fast paced and fluid than today. And WITHIN that...yeah the term "throwback" can be overused but I'll still say its kinda a last bit of "when men were men" era. Yeah I think I can make some cultural observation like that lol. Just more life tested country strong dudes then who generally EARNED their reputations. When Wes Unseld and Rudy T got into it, a commentator said he wouldnt want to mess with either of them. You just "knew" why. Don't even need myth telling, just LOOK at Wes Unseld. And thats how it should be. (That was a little before when I first started watching ball. Its my opinion that Bad Boy Pistons period and 90s was some "ugly ball" era even with Jordan) But it wasnt to put down the defense then at all, which is linked to being being "soft". The presentation was more classy and clean, but still you knew you were watching a MAN'S GAME. Yeah I remember Dennis Johnson well, and McHale. GOD I HATED those guys...lol And I'm glad they seem to be swallowing the whistles more too. Yes there's some punks now and way too flambouyant inked up thug culture that rubs people the wrong way. But a COMPETITIVE player has rights to show PASSION and FIRE in what he's doing. Agree on the Scola/Patterson midrange shooting as well.
Rudy asked his doctor what that funny metalic taste was in his mouth, his doctor said, "That's your spinal fluid."
