?

Should players be banned from accepting salaries below their market value?

  1. Yes, it prevents other teams from having a fair shot at a title.

    15.4%
  2. No, let them do what they want.

    84.6%

Fear of the imaginary bogeyman is just conspiracy theory in action, neither dumping nor predatory pricing has ever been used to establish a monopoly price model. They use such strong words so people actually believe it, but it just doesn't happen, nor does it make sense for it to happen (which is why SCOTUS wiped out any potential claim towards predatory pricing two decades ago)

It's just the leftover crap of tariffs, nothing more, nothing less.

LOLwut? First of all your argument is flawed because predatory pricing laws were put into effect because it puts other companies out of business, hence creating monopolies and stifling innovation etc. etc. In Lebron's case he won't be putting anyone out of business by taking less, in fact, he's taking a smaller piece of the pie (ie Mia's capspace) so other people can have more money. So it's the opposite.

Secondly, wtf is this BS about players not having a choice on where they want to work and for what amount they want to work for? So what you're saying is that the player should be stripped of all choice and can't even choose who he wants to work for? LOL you do realize you're advocating some form of forced labor, right? NBA players already get that treatment when they get drafted, and you're saying you want that to happen for their entire careers? Yeah...the NBA might get a ton of lawsuits if they implemented that

Thirdly, LBJ isn't harming other teams by signing below market value, he's just making it harder for every other team to win a ring...something he does anyway just by signing with a team, and to be honest even at the max he would still be below market value because other teams would be willing to pay more than 16M for his services.

Also, what about all the players who take less money to go to a contender? If Battier wanted to go to Miami for 3M a year to win rings, and the Kings offered him 3.1M to go play in their crappy team, you're telling me Battier has no choice but to go Sacramento, because otherwise that would be predatory pricing? You can say your little rule only applies to max contracts, but then wouldn't that be discriminating on the max players, you're basically taking rights away from the most valuable players in the league which would be one of the most absurd ideas ever.

But, by 2006 GP didn't fit the star definition. He came off the bench for 7.7 ppg. If he was underpaid, it wasn't by a whole lot.

    This. The OP's analogy fails.

The real comparison would be for rich teams to OVER pay players (thereby operating at a loss) in order to squash competition. The salary cap is the sports world's anti-dumping law.
