it was a joke, but i know some people are sensitive about anything race (not saying you). i just thought it was pretty clear that i was pointing out irony. to everyone-i'm not saying porter wasn't qualified, there are probably a lot qualified, him being a minority is a plus. and it will be ironic when he's fired
Isn't this the current PR coming from the ALastros? "We've torn everything down and are rebuilding "the RIGHT way". The winning will come because this is the right way to do it. Add to that the other corollary that states that Houston fans are mere bandwagoners who will be clamoring to get back on board once the "winning" starts so we know that our way IS the right way. It's a myth that Houston is a front-running town. Houston sports fans are long-suffering fans who literally put up with years and decades of substandard sports product. Look at how long Houston fans continued to support the terrible teams from the Oilers, Rockets and Astros over the past 50 years sometimes with little to no reward. No, Crane is making money either way only by doing it this way, he doesn't have to spend any money. Plus there's always the possibility that the ALastros sheep will write him a check to go get some players. And I'm saying that is completely irrelevant. If he isn't winning games in two-three years he will be gone. It doesn't matter what the Front Office has done or what kind of farm system exists or what kind of players he's given, he will ultimately be judged on wins and losses. That's why I don't expect him to be around when the "winning" starts. I've seen this scenario play out too many times to believe that the ALastros will be any different from other teams in this respect.
I don't care what the Astros are saying. I feel that rebuilding through the draft, building up the farm system, and refusing to overpay for vets IS the right way to rebuild. The Astros had the worst farm system in baseball around 2010 which coincided when the MLB team went south. There's not much else you can do when the farm system needs to be rebuilt basically from scratch. What is your definition of front-running? I didn't say Houston was an apathetic sports town (sorta like Los Angeles or Miami, where there's plenty more to care about than sports). My definition is that fans don't support losing teams here attendance-wise. That has been proven with every single losing team this city has ever had (except for the Texans... the NFL is an exception alltogether nowadays). Hell, there's been plenty of years where winning teams were barely getting sellouts. I'm pretty sure Crane knows that his team is going to have to win games in order to sellout games in MMP like it was 2006 again. And I'm saying you're wrong. Plus, if the new regime is so cheap/awful/stingy, then there's no reason for them to fire a manager arbitrarily (while continuing to pay his whole contract), and hire another manager. Porter's job is safe until he proves that he's totally incompetent, or he clashes with somebody (or he just flat-out quits when the team doesn't get him anybody good). Didn't you say you were done with this team once they moved to the AL? Why do you still care? Why are you using ALastros to describe them rather than typing Astros? That's almost Gammons-like annoying.
Record won't matter much in year 1 or 2. Year 3 will need to show progress. Year 4 is probably when records will really start to matter.
I should clarify my standpoint... the team does need to look improved with each additional talented prospect that's brought up. If the team looks worse in year 3 than year 1, and its clear by then how Porter is relating (or not relating) to players... then by all means re-eval the manager.
Your initial comment was your joke and I have not responded to the joking comment of your posts since you clarified that. Folks now are responding to your thoughts that Porter was hired due to Crane's past racial issues. What will be ironic about him being fired? The vast majority of managers are fired.
because he is pacifying the critics but he is setting him up for failure. whoever is managing this team now will be fired imo
Similar to Larry Dierker, Phil Garner, Jimy Williams, Art Howe, Cecil Cooper, Brad Mills, and just about every manager? Even Tony La Russa, Joe Torre, and Bobby Cox have been fired.
that response was predictable but my fault. if this team isn't winning in three years, i think no matter how much progress is made porter will be fired. i just think the fans won't care three years from now what the long term plan was. they will have to be competing for playoffs at that point to keep his job
Every manager will get fired eventually if they don't win, but they won't fire a guy if we are trending upwards.
That is a bold prediction. I will make another...whoever is managing the Milwaukee Brewers now, will be fired.
If the Brewers are not winning within 3 years, I predict their manager will be fired. That is the case with most managers. If the Astros are making progress, regardless of competing for the playoffs after 2013-2015 AND Porter hasn't "lost" the team, he will still be around.
guysb believe i don't care. i think its funny. is it the race card for me to say crane chose porter over other qualified candidates? let me ask you this, do the astros of the past and crane have issues with minorities. why would it be so bad if he chose porter partly for that reason?
Actually the Astros never really had a problem with minorities. Involving race in a hiring decision is wrong.
Astros have a very good history in regards to minority hiring. There were some people that got caught up in the Astros not having an American black player for a short time, but there was no racial reason behind it. Same organization had minorities in the front office, plenty of hispanic players, & had plenty of Black American players previously.
