Top of the lake haven't heard but will seek out and for the weird dialog between Norman and the chick is expected because Norman Bates is not a normal teenager? His character is loosely based on the movie Psycho...

I thought it was pretty good. After reading this thread my expectations were lowered, but I enjoyed it for what it is.

Top of The Lake is a Jane Complain (The Piano) mystery that takes place in New Zealand. It is similar in tone to The Killing. Metacritic gave it an '84' so I thought I would give it a go.

I will watch 2-3 more episodes of Bates Motel. Sometimes pilots can be different from the rest of the series because they get filmed by a different crew at a different time.

So I'm half-way through top of the lake, is that Asian girl a recurring character in the show? She's such an annoying little brat and mean as hell.. I'm not a fan of the Australian accent, I don't know why but it just bugs the hell out of me kinda like people with Boston accents...

He wasn't dead that long was he? But yes I kind of agree it's a little bit forced. Out of all the rooms the cop chooses that room, etc.

He just died that night, a few hours ago. I don't know how long it typically takes for a body to start smelling. A quick google search on the topic seems to indicate it could be anywhere from a few hours to a few days or longer depending on the weather, exposure to the elements and cause of death. At any rate I think it's safe to say that this body didn't smell yet, whether that is realistic or not. The cops were there because they didn't know anyone had moved in and they saw the car they didn't recognize and activity at 2 AM on a week night. They weren't actively searching for anything or they would have checked more than just one room.

It seems that Norman's mother killed his father, and that some other psycho operates near or in the hotel who is drugging the chained up girl.

I thought the show was reasonably entertaining, though I don't know how it can sustain itself long term since we already know Norman and his mother's ultimate fate, though I supose we don't know the exact cause of his mother's death. Seems more like a mini-series than something that could carry on for multiple seasons, but we shall see.

So what's up with the sketch book Norman found under the carpet? It had like Japanese writing and animation, maybe some crazy **** about to go down?

It looked to me like they were drawings of the girl who was chained up and being drugged at the very end of the episode by some one. How it got under the carpet I don't know.

I watched it. It was actually pretty good. I also missed the 1st episode and found it was easy to catch up and know what was going on.

I will probably watch the rest of the season.

dvr'd it...watched it...except one of my kids shut it off after 45 minutes. So I dvr'd it again at the midnight airing and will watch the final 15 tonight.

I thought it was better than the first episode. When the chick opened the
car door and saw her dad
...that was pretty f'd up. And I keep waiting for the mom to start making out with one of her sons. I just get this really creepy vibe about her.

I like this show. I hope they keep taking odd/strange/creepy tangents throughout. I think that's what will make it survive.

Man I was thinking the same thing. There was that weird scene when she was getting undressed and he was staring at her. Then right after when she sat next to him and they had that long stare at each other from like 3 inches away.

    Weird. Shes hot, though.

Will keep watching to see when he goes nuts because apparently that character (Norman Bates) ends up killing his mom, then more people..a la Psycho.

The awkward weirdness is all intentional, it's a twisted relationship to say the least. The 2 leads are doing really good work thus far and the world the writers have created is very weird which makes it pretty interesting.

I was starting to think the same thing until the last 15 minutes of last night's episode. Then **** got weird...which is exactly the direction I wanted this show to go. I even told my wife at the halfway point last night that if the show didn't make some storyline changes, they probably wouldn't see a second season.

But now, I'm rethinking everything I've seen up to this point and wondering if Norman was wacked out of his mind on some of the stuff he experienced.

And of course, we had another moment where I thought
Norman was going to lay one right on his mom's lips.

And the end-of-show-next-week-trailers left me wondering...
is the cop into some weird stuff or did Norman imagine that girl down in his basement. And I'm starting to feel a bit cringy about Norman's two girlfriends...both of them seem really likable...but I'm waiting for Norman or his mom to go ape**** on either/both of them.
