Ed Reed needs to stop acting like hes 25 yrs old.. Bro your 34 takes the best deal
now or you will regret it later... The more he waits the less the offfers will get..

Im sure his agent is already telling him to make a decision..

Ed Reed doesn't do what Ed Reed does for Ed Reed, Ed Reed does what Ed Reed does because Ed Reed IS Ed Reed.

It sure would be funny if the Texans pulled the rug out from under him.

Very low offer? As far as we can tell it's the best offer on the table. It's better than Baltimore's and nobody else is involved.

It makes sense though bc Ed Reed isn't going to find a better deal and Houston probably gave them until tonight to make a decision before they move on to other options.

What makes you say that? The Texans identified (by virtue of it being exposed, but, still...) a major flaw, and then quickly made efforts to rectify it with a smart but reasonable approach, which included not throwing absurd money at the problem (ie re-signing the 40th best safety in football to a long-term, cap-crippling contract).

If Ed Reed bolts, it'll be because a remarkably dumb (or desperate) team stepped into the ring and offered him stupid money, or his heart won't let him ultimately leave Baltimore. And I wouldn't blame the Texans for either; I'd instead be glad they stuck to their guns of finding short-term solutions while keeping an eye on longer-term goals (namely, keeping the nucelus of JJ, BC and KJ in place).

I actually like the hardline stance the Texans are taking with this. While Reed would be awesome to have in a Texans uniform, it's fairly obvious that right now, we're the only team that's sitting at the negotiating table. There is absolutely no reason to overbid for him right now, and until a team like SF decides to jump into the pool with us, we are in the driver's seat. If Reed doesn't want to take the deal we are offering, it seems like he's going to have to either retire, or take a paycut somewhere else.

I like your optimism but if that's what ends up happening the franchise has gotten worse from last season to this one. FACT. You can go ahead and say the draft hasn't happened but it's still a fact that the team has done nothing but lose quality players and depth. You saw what losing depth did last season. You had a tackling dummy at LB and at RT

But overpaying Reed right now will have long term ramifications, which we could very well see when it comes time to re-sign Cushing and Watt. The interest shown from both Reed and the Texans is very real, and I still think Reed will be a Texan before everything is said and done, but the money HAS to make sense for the organization. Right now, what's the incentive to overpay him? No other team has shown the desire to sign him up the way the Texans have.....we'd be bidding against ourselves.

yep, the people b****ing right now about sitting on our hands would also (rightfully so) be going insane if we upped the offer to get him to sign, essentially bidding against ourselves. The thing that the dumbest GMs in sports tend to do.

Way happier waiting him out if there aren't equivalent guys out there (and I don't think there are)...and if we're not losing anything. I haven't seen anyone significant sign since Friday. In fact, I think more guys like Lloyd have shown up.

I am against signing Reed for more than $4 million. I just think the Texans didn't have to tie themselves to Reed like they have. They've neglected signing anyone else because of it. No RT, WR, LB or anything. It's a gamble and the odds do look in their favor but if they roll snake eyes they HAVE TO hit on at least 3 rookies they draft this year or they won't make the playoffs.

who did they miss on because of Reed? If they had signed Quin, they'd have had the same amount of cap space. So it's not a space issue...you're saying it's a timing issue.

Who did the Texans miss on between Quin signing and now that they won't have a shot at after Reed decides (assuming that's soon)?

If it's not a timing issue, then why are they missing on a RT, WR, LB? Someone had to play safety. Did you want neither Quin nor a FA? Then you're saying you were willing to put a rookie there instead of at the other positions you mentioned. In which case it's still your "snake eyes" theory.

How is this even true? They have lost exactly 1 useful player..Quin..from a 12 win team. How is that now down to a 1 in 36 chance of making the playoffs?

The waiting, while hard on the fans, is probably smart. Everything I'm reading suggests tha the first wave of FA was a decent amount of spending, but even some quality players (e.g. Avril to the Seahawks) signed for less than the had hoped. Avril signed a 1 yr deal in the hopes of a better market next year.

A lot of folks think that prices will only continue to drop for the remaining players, and now is the time for getting value contracts for good players. The absence of another bidder for Reed (at least one that is visible) suggests that this is true. At some point, the players (and agents) will get worried about being the last one standing with no chair (or in this case, no team cap space). There will be some pressure to take what is available, and that's when teams can get good value.

Of course, we're all speculating as to how soft the market might be, but look at objective evidence and the lack of another suitor for Reed.

There's a bit of poker playing with all FA's, and sometimes teams win, sometimes players win. But fans generally often don't have all the information or the stomach for it.

I don't think the Texans are putting RT as a high priority. I think they're content to let Newton develop. Similarly, I get the feeling that they're fine with letting McCain walk and having Brandon Harris be the nickel corner.

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you. Last year they cut Winston, let Briesel walk, and traded Demeco, and I understand why they did. But their plan for replacing them didn't even come close to panning out. We'll have to wait and see, but I fear similar dropoffs this year.
