http://deadspin.com/why-does-steubenvilles-football-coach-still-have-his-j-455800918 I don't know if this was posted...the coach should be punished too
To be clear, I'm not attacking you, I was just pointing out that I think you were giving their argument undue credit.
[This post isn't in response only to your post, but in general on sexual violence.] Rape is terrible. I'd be quite upset to say the least if it happened to anyone I knew. However, I think you're overstating when you say rape is worse than murder. Murder is the end of the line for another human being. All their memories, their dreams, their embarrassments, their chance of being a contender? All gone. Rape on the other hand can lead someone to commit suicide. But there's a possibility of recovery and moving on with your life. As for those who "blame the victim", I wouldn't castigate them so reflexively as others have done. I also disagree with their POV, however. A girl should be free to wear what she wants, flirt with anyone, and walk alone in a dark alley if she wants. Some male prisoners should also be able to serve their time in a correctional facility without having to look over their back. Unfortunately, sexual violence against women is being 'fought' as ineffectively as the war on drugs because the root causes are not addressed. Our patriarchal society is a major cause of rape. It refuses to effectively punish men who too often get away with the crime. It also refuses to radically transform a culture which attaches sexual aggression and dominance with masculinity. Until these change, we will blindly whack moles with our overburdened legal system. The country and most of the world are a long way from being a non-patriarchal society. This is why other posters have a valid point when it comes to living your life in general (not counting this particular incident): be aware of your surroundings. The world is a cruel, dark place filled with lots of people suffering from antisocial personality disorder. Being on the top of the food chain doesn't mean you relinquish self-defense or common sense after thousands of years of evolution. This is not a self-fulfilling prophecy of additional patriarchy. There should be concurrent changes in legislation to make the penalities harsher for rape, to create educational programs that teach sexual ethics, to teach compassion and mutual respect for each gender, and to place more women in positions of institutional power. That being said, I'll continue telling my male and female friends to be vigilant when going out. In undergrad, a buddy got so drunk that while he was passed out someone took his wallet and cell phone. Another friend had her camera stolen while she was inebriated. Both of them were partially responsible for their losses. This maybe what some "blame the victim" posters have in mind. Btw, guns are a great equalizer. Women don't need to be protected like precious creatures as they currently are once they're carrying. Most of the women in my family all are comfortable with firearms. If I have a daughter, she will know how to use a gun effectively, and hopefully be trained in CQC as well.
I'm not saying it's worse than murder. What I'm saying is many women who've been raped wish they were dead. Do I agree with this? Who am I to say as I have no idea what it's like to raped.
I hope none of the mothers of some of you ever got drunk. Wonder how that conversation would've gone if she had and was raped. "Well, mom, sucks you got raped, and I'm not saying you deserved it, but maybe you shouldn't have drank too much." I know none of you who have the nerve to be questioning this woman have significant others or daughters, so think of your mom. Some of you absolutely sicken me. This board is really turning into a cesspool. I've already slowly lowered the frequency with which I post or even lurk here, and this thread is really the icing on the cake. Disgusting.
I have a daughter. I am disgusted by most of the posts in this thread. This girl was enticed to this party by her ex boyfriend and I garuntee she was roofied. They police waited too long to test for the substance; it passes through the system rather quickly. The culture of the whole town screams of Happy Valley. Football crazy town who will do anything to cover up any mess that could smear their reputation. I hope justice is served to all who had a role in this odious action.
These are some good points and totally agree with them. Especially in a place like Steubenville where culture is even stronger and there is an institutional desire to protect sports heroes. True also as there are many consequences for men who get so drunk they pass out. This may be be better in an another thread but while I agree guns are a great force equalizer they are far from being a panacea for self-defense. Further in regard to a victim that has passed out having a gun is meaningless and possibly more dangerous where the attackers might steal the gun from the victim. Also since alcohol lowers inhibitions and judgement guns and alcohol should never be mixed. Finally many rapes are date and/or acquaintance rapes where a victim might not be likely to shoot the person or realize the threat until it is too late.
What? You're calling people losers (in all-caps, no less!) for thinking otherwise, but you don't think it?
Again... Underage drinking deserves a ticket for underage drinking. That's all it deserves. It doesn't deserve a rape. A rape deserves prison terms. A rape isn't lessened because the rape victim was drunk and underage.
Wow, skimmed the thread from where I last posted Very disturbing posts from TheRealist137 and pgabriel. For the dignity and peace of mind of everyone who raised you, taught you and ever placed any expectations in you, I hope you two are just trolling on purpose.

who said the rape was lessened? we can sit here and get on high horses and say we shouldn't talk about this girl being drunk but if i have a young daughter, i would hope i would warn her about the dangers of drinking to that point around a bunch of young men
thank's for letting us know about your posting frequency. quick question, if this girl wasn't pissy drunk would she have been raped?
and no, getting drunk isn't the same as well she wore a shirt skirt what did she expect? and no one is even criticizing her. what happened to her is despicable, pissing on someone is just down right evil. but to ignore that she was passed out drunk is putting your hand in the sand its irresponsible
